THE ROYAL EAGLE
Physical description
The golden eagle is a large diurnal raptor of the family Accipitridae. It is dark brown in color with light brown to golden yellow plumage on the top of the head and on the nape of the neck. That's why it's also called the Golden Eagle.

It has dark brown eyes and a sight eight times more piercing than that of the human. Its beak is crooked and measures between 4 and 6.5 cm. The tip of the bill is black. Its legs are yellow and covered with feathers to the fingers. At the end of the fingers, its talons are extremely powerful and the avillon, the rear greenhouse that is used to pierce his prey, measures between 6 and 7 cm.

The golden eagle has wide wings. It measures between 66 cm and 1 m, and its wingspan (that is to say its width when its wings are deployed) is between 1m80 and 2m35. It weighs between 2.5 kg and 6.35 kg. The female is always larger than the male and the eagles raised in captivity may be heavier and larger. It hovers with flattened V-wings and usually flies at a speed of 45-50 km / h. It can go up to 130 km / h and even reach 320 km / h in dive.
His place of life
The Golden Eagle lives in Europe, North Africa, North America and Asia. He lives in mountainous areas with rocky plateaus. In France, it is found mainly in the Alps, the Pyrenees and Corsica.
His diet
The golden eagle is carnivorous and feeds on rabbits, marmots, squirrels and birds as well as large mammals such as foxes, cats, goats, young ibex and young deer. If prey is scarce, then it eats carrion and reptiles. It is able to carry up to 3.5 kg of food by flying.
The eagle is a great predator thanks to its sight, its agility, its speed and its powerful greenhouses.
His reproduction
Eagles can start breeding around 4 or 5 years old. When male and female choose, they perform courtship displays consisting of spiral ascents, festoons and dives, and stay together all their lives.

They are also faithful to their territory and build up to five nests called "areas" that they use for several years. These nests are made of branches, grass, bark, dead leaves and mosses for the bottom and are built in an inaccessible place, on a cliff or at the top of a tree. They measure up to 2 or 3 m in diameter and, over the years and successive repairs, they can reach 2 m high and weigh up to 1 ton. It takes 4 to 6 weeks to build a nest.

Each year, in March or April, the female lays between 1 and 4 eggs (but most often 2) at 3 or 4 days apart. These eggs are whitish and spotted brown and the incubation lasts between 35 and 45 days.
The female brood while the male hunts and defends the territory.
The eagle must hatch its own shell to get out of the egg, his parents never intervene. He uses for this a small tooth located on the tip of its beak and will fall after a few weeks. It will take two days to go out and it will appear with an entirely white plumage. Over time, the white will gradually disappear and the adult plumage will be reached in the fifth year.

At first, it is the mother who hunts to feed her young, then joined by the male. The eagle will remain in the nest for about 4 months and will become an adult at the age of 4 to 6 years.
His life expectancy
The golden eagle lives around 25 years in the wild and up to 45 years in captivity.
The cry of the eagle
It is said that the eagle glitters or trumpets. His cry sounds like a "hroua" and he also utters "hié" and "kié".
Particular signs
The golden eagle is the emperor of birds. For centuries, it symbolizes strength and courage. In ancient history, the eagle was even considered a god.

In France, it is a protected species. It is therefore forbidden to kill, maim or capture, destroy or remove eggs, or destroy or degrade nests.
