THE ALBATROSS

Physical description
The albatross is a large sea bird of the family Diomedeidae. It measures between 71 and 135 cm and weighs between 6 and 12 kg. Its plumage is predominantly white or gray.
Its wings are very long, they can be up to 3.50 m once tense. Its light pink bill is also long (between 15 and 18 cm) and crooked at the end. On either side of this beak is a nostril of the shape of a long tube. This form gives the albatross a fairly high sense of smell that allows it to locate food areas in the midst of huge oceans.

His place of life
The albatross is found mainly in the waters of the southern hemisphere. Only a few species are present in the North Pacific, Japan, Hawaii, Japan and the Galapagos Islands.

His diet
Albatrosses eat fish, squid or krill (small shrimp) that they fish on the surface or at a relatively shallow depth (up to 5 meters).

His reproduction
Albatrosses are able to reproduce at the age of 5 years. They usually lay an egg every 2 years. The male and female incubate the egg each in turn during the incubation period (70 to 80 days). After hatching, the chick is hatched and fed by its parents during the first weeks, until it is able to regulate its own temperature. Then it will take another 4 to 6 months to know how to fly.

His life expectancy
The albatross has a life expectancy of 50 years.

The cry of the albatross
The albatross emits specific cries during courtship, when choosing a partner. These cries will allow the trained couple to recognize themselves later.

Particular signs
The albatross is able to travel thousands of kilometers without resting. Its large wings allow it to use the wind to hover. Thus, it hardly beats wings during the flight and thus provides little effort. It is however dependent on the wind and the waves to fly. Thus, when the weather is calm, he is obliged to land and wait for the wind to rise.
