The hermit crab is an invertebrate animal

The hermit crab is a crustacean, so an invertebrate animal. It is also called Pagure.

It looks like a lobster, however no shells protect its soft abdomen. He has eight legs, two claws, two eyes and two claws. It also has two antennas.

He lives in salt water, on sand, mud or rock. His food comes from dead animals. It cleans the seabed of their waste. It also feeds on plants occasionally.

He appropriates the empty shell of another crustacean to protect himself. As he grows up, he changes his dwelling for a larger carapace.

Mating is done in the water. The female can not reproduce before moulting. She lays eggs that turn into larvae, then hermit crabs.

Several sea anemones attach to the shell of Bernard Hermit to protect it from predators. If Bernard changes shell he will bring them with him and they will settle on the new shell. Anemones benefit because they do not have to travel to find their food.
