With its two big bumps on the skull, its gray dress and its small ears, the Asian elephant is easily differentiated from its African cousin. Very widely domesticated nowadays for its use in collecting wood, the Asian elephant remains nonetheless threatened in its natural habitat. Sociable and relatively docile, the Asian elephant generally moves in groups of about twenty individuals. Like other elephants, the Asian elephant uses its prehensile trunk as its main working tool. This allows him to feed, but also to move heavy loads, or to splash at the time of the toilet. The Asian elephant population is now estimated at between 35,000 and 40,000 individuals.
