Red squirrel

A diurnal animal, the red squirrel, who often enjoys dawn to go out and feed, is a territorial and rather lonely animal. As part of the family of sciurids, like the meerkat, the red squirrel has a russet coat and a white belly. Easily recognizable by its plume tail that serves as a rudder, and allows it to jump from tree to tree, the red squirrel is a very predicting animal, which throughout the year, amassing dried fruits to keep 'winter. Considered endangered in Great Britain, because of the invasive aspect of the gray squirrel, the red squirrel is not yet threatened in France, but remains to be watched.

REPRODUCTION: The sexual maturity of the red squirrel is around 1 year, the gestation period is 38 days, and the female gives birth to 3 or 4 pups per litter.

PREDATORS: The marten, the wild cat, the fox, the buzzard, the cats and the domestic dogs.

Gray squirrel

Originally from eastern North America, the gray squirrel that was introduced in England and threatens all Europe with its invasive aspect, is very present in the Montreal area. Possessing a generally gray coat, which varies from brown to black, the gray squirrel is like its cousin of Europe, an omnivorous animal, which as of autumn, makes its stock of provisions in dried fruits, in order to prepare the cold season. At risk of eradicating red squirrels, dislodging them and destroying their habitats, the gray squirrel is a real threat to the equilibrium of our native squirrels.

FOOD: Omnivore: Walnuts, hazelnuts, acorns, eggs, caterpillars, and sometimes insects.

REPRODUCTION: The sexual maturity of the gray squirrel is reached around the age of 11 months, the gestation period is 40 days, and the female raises 3 to 6 pups.

PREDATORS: foxes, bobcat, weasels, skunks, mink, buzzards, grand duke, dogs and cats ....
