Aspect

The White Hook is an elegant wading bird that can not be confused, with its black beak, straight and slender like a needle, and its long pink legs, which are the largest, in proportion, of all species of waders. She seems fragile on her long legs which are also very thin. In flight, she holds them in extension, and they largely exceed her tail. Its plumage is white below and black on it. The male, a little taller, has a black top with a green metallic sheen; while the female has a shiny black brown back that contrast with her black wings. The female has a white head, sometimes spotted, while the male has a black nape in breeding plumage. In winter, both male and female have an entirely white head. The pointed wings are entirely black in the adult. The young have greyish head and neck; and a brown coat less dark than that of adults. Their legs are gray-brown in flesh tones. Many of them look like adults in late spring.

The white stilt has black and white plumage with all-black wings, as well as the upper back and the back of the neck. The underparts are white, with a white collar contrasting with the black back and neck.

The head has a white face, and the top of the cap is black. The eyes are red. The long, thin bill is black and straight. The very long legs and fingers are reddish pink.

Both sexes are almost similar, but the female is brownish whereas the male is blacker and has bright greenish feathers.

The juvenile is clearer than the adult.
