BIOGRAPHY OF YASSER ARAFAT

Born in Palestine under the British mandate, Yasser Arafat is studying engineering in Cairo. In 1959 he founded Fatah, a nationalist movement that merged with other organs in 1964 in the Organization for the Liberation of Palestine. The stakes are clear: to challenge the international authorities on the Palestinian cause and to found a secular and democratic state. In 1974, Arafat is invited by the UN for a special session. But the terrorist methods of the PLO discredits it, especially since it is successively driven from Jordan (during the "black September") and Lebanon where it indirectly triggered a civil war. The PLO then migrates to Tunis; Arafat renounces the armed struggle and recognizes the State of Israel. In 1993, he signed agreements with Shimon Peres and Yitzhak Rabin (all three earn the Nobel Peace Prize), but Rabin's assassination halted the process of pacification. While Hamas's armed dissidence weakens its position and strives to maintain Yasser Arafat by authoritarian methods, it becomes the number one enemy of the Israeli right in the 2000s and is directly threatened by many. times. Following his death in Clamart, in 2004, the Palestinian Authority is deprived of president until the election of Mahmoud Abbas, in 2005.
