The musk deer is a deer

The musk deer, also known as musky deer, or musk deer, is a ruminant herbivorous animal. It is part of the deer family, so deer, which lives in China, the Himalayas and Siberia in the mountains at more than 2,000 meters of altitude.

It is a small mammal, 55 cm at the rump, and its weight does not exceed 20 kilos.

He does not wear horns, or wood, but he has long canines, 5 to 10 cm, that extend beyond his lower jaw.

Its fur is dark brown with long gray spots and stiff spots. He has large hooves and his longer hind legs force him to move by jumping.

The musk deer does not live in a group, it is a solitary ruminant animal, and it is rarely seen accompanied.

It is a rather nocturnal animal that sleeps during the day and enjoys the night to feed. He eats foliage, lichens and mushrooms that he then ruminates.

The period of love, or season of reproduction, occurs between November and January. After mating, the male resumes his lonely life.

Gestation lasts 5 to 6 months and the female gives birth to one or two fawns. Little ones weigh only 600 to 700 grams at birth.

At the time of rut, the male secretes a substance called musk, which accumulates in a pocket in his abdomen. Hence his musk deer name.

Apart from the lynx and other wild animals that are naturally its predators, there is the man who hunt for musk and trade.

As one uses his musk to fix the perfumes, he is now an animal in danger of extinction.

The musk deer's life is about 10 to 12 years old.
