The anatised - Anatinae family

The subfamily of the year-olds includes duck species

The birds of the Anatinidae subfamily (Anatinae) are of the great Anatidae (Anatidae), and are part of the Anseriformes family order. They are water birds with webbed feet that they can swim easily. Several species of ducks, mergansers, scaups ... are members of this subfamily.

They are palmiped birds whose legs with 4 fingers have webs that connect the 3 of the front. Before, members of this subfamily were only dabbling ducks that did not have the lobed hindfinger. The others with lobed fingers were the diving ducks of the subfamily Aythyinae. Now, the DNA criteria have changed the ranking and included several divers in this subfamily.

Some are dabbling ducks that will simply filter food suspended in the water with their beaks equipped with filter slats. Others will immerse their head and body in the water, vertically, leaving only their tail protruding above the surface, to feed on roots, algae and other parts of shallow aquatic plants. Others are diving ducks that will catch fish and other prey.

They have an oval-shaped body, with a short tail, sometimes with fan-shaped feathers. Ducks float naturally, and some have difficulty dipping deep to capture their food, and go to shallow streams where they can reach food from the surface.

Many anatin species, such as teal, migrate to winter in warmer areas where stream water does not freeze. They return the following spring to nest in areas where food is plentiful and allow them to raise the ducklings more easily.

Birds of the subfamily Anatinae often have good longevity, as some ducks can live up to 30 years. However, the large amount of predators, and hunters, do not let them often reach this kind of longevity.
