HISTORY - The
great traveler Ibn Battouta is honored in Brussels. Friday, February 26, an
exhibition of historical documents retracing the journey of the famous Moroccan
traveler was inaugurated at the Brussels-Flemish house Daarkom.
Documents,
frescoes and manuscripts immerse visitors in Ibn Battouta's era, providing
historical elements on his journey that lasted nearly 30 years. This event is
an opportunity to "compare his career to that of Marco Polo," said
Larbi Khatouta, president of the club Ibn Battouta, association organizer of
the exhibition.
Unlike the
latter, who left Venice to trade, Ibn Battouta made his trip to humanity,
science and culture and traveled a distance of more than 120,000 kilometers,
three times more than Marco Polo stressed the community actor.
Several books
dealing with the life of the Moroccan traveler and his journey have been
presented to the public. The opening of the exhibition was followed by a debate
on this great man and his contribution to the travel literature.
Universally
famous for his travels around the world, Ibn Batouta was born in Tangier on
February 24, 1304. He left his hometown in 1325 to make the pilgrimage to Mecca
and returned only after 29 years of adventures in this world. which corresponds
to 44 current countries. Ibn Battouta died in 1369, leaving behind the story of
his journey Rihla, which is one of the most important works of universal
literature.
