The Australian Short-nosed Echidna or Echidna is a fascinating animal. Resembling a big hedgehog, this little marsupial is the only mammal with the platypus with the particularity of laying eggs. His back is covered with thorns, his nose is long and pointed and his legs are equipped with curved claws. These, allowing him to dig into the ground to find the insects he is fond of.

Like the hedgehog, and although not part of the same family, the echidna has the ability to roll into a ball to protect herself from danger. It is a rather solitary animal, whose activity is both diurnal and nocturnal.

REPRODUCTION: The sexual maturity of echidnae is reached around the age of 4 to 5 years and the duration of gestation is 20 to 30 days. Then, the female lays an egg that she lays in an abdominal pocket while waiting for hatching 10 days later. For 3 months, the baby, nursed by his mother, stays in this pocket and then comes out with beautiful and big quills.
