The different software
There are 3 major types of computer software, regardless of the operating system of your computer (GNU / Linux, Windows or Mac).
1) Proprietary and paid software
These software made by software companies are sold to the user when buying his computer, boxed in specialty stores or on the Internet.
But beware, what is sold is not the right of ownership of the user on the software but only a right of use, it is a user license.
Example: The Windows operating system is of this type.

It is not possible to keep Windows for you when selling your old computer and it is not possible to resell it separately from the machine.

First pitfall therefore, the license of simple use, second, the software is under copyright (= the source code of the software is closed and protected), it is not possible for a user whatever his skill level in computer science to modify the software for its needs or to add new potentialities.

Only the company holding the property license has this right, hence the commercial genesis of innumerable paid updates.

The price of user licenses can be significantly increased depending on whether the license for use relates to 1 or more networked stations or not.

The vast majority of software on Windows and Mac are of this type, they are rather rare in GNU / Linux.

Shareware

Very often the paid software is sharewares. The latter is for an author to release a complete version of his software for free circulation so that the public can test it without making a financial commitment. This mode of distribution can be likened to a period of "free trial" during which the author offers you the opportunity to evaluate software in the most obvious and effective way: by using it in your usual work context.

Freely downloadable, a shareware is not free. A moral contract binds its author to whoever installs the software. It states that the user of the shareware must, if he wants to use the product and even keep it on his computer at the end of the evaluation period pay the price of the license. Clearly: once past thirty days trial of a shareware, it will be necessary to go to the cashier if one wishes to keep the usufruct. Otherwise we will have to rest the software on its shelf, in other words, uninstall it, if for any reason, we do not want to acquire it.

However it will be noticed that the authors of sharewares, to remedy the abuses, voluntarily or not, also take more and more often care to disable certain functionalities of their software to incite the public to remunerate them.

The purpose of this type of application is to gently lure the client by providing an overview of the capabilities of the software. But just a preview because many of its features will be restrained.

For example, with the demo version of the famous Photoshop you will not be able to print, save, or even copy and paste. It goes without saying that downloading a demo does not commit you to the extent that you will not be able to really exploit the software!
