So the great Pushkin (in his poem The Horseman of Brazen), imagine he Peter the
Great at the dawn of founding his capital, today Three hundred years old, on
this perfect site Welcome to St. Petersburg, city of the tsars, city of poets,
where bridges rise on the Neva, while the long baroque and neoclassical facades
of the palaces were put in its waters and those of canals…
City of fountains and parks, churches and cathedrals, gildings and
Atlanteans, magnified by the majestic buildings of the Italians Rossi and
Rastrelli ... City of revolutions, resistant city that still had not
surrendered after 872 days of siege during the Second World War, city whose
inhabitants are recognized throughout Russia for their culture and education
... City of the Hermitage Museum and ballet Mariinsky, city of icons and
saints, where angels watch over the passers-by of the Saint-Isaac drum, a city
of new districts, but also of backyards worthy of Dostoevsky's pen ...
Here, everyone needs an
umbrella 220 days a year, each one skates, walks, fishes or bathes in the
river, that parent the white nights of soft lights ... Majestic and romantic,
the cultural capital of Russia also vibrates an energy unparalleled since 1991,
restaurants, bars, clubs, art galleries open and close at full speed, festivals
and outdoor parties are not counting more ...
Hermitage
Museum symbol of the city, the Hermitage could be the only destination
of the trip! Its fabulous collections are now exhibited in a complex of
buildings lined up along the Neva, including the famous Winter Palace. Behind
its sumptuous baroque facades, masterpieces by Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci,
Raphael, Rembrandt, Rubens ...
St. Isaac's Cathedral
The work of Auguste de Montferrand, a young French architect who
arrived in Russia in 1816, Saint Isaac's Cathedral is the fourth highest in
this area. Its construction, which lasted almost 40 years, was completed in
1858. Dear all St. Petersburg, it fits perfectly in the architecture of the
city: imposing columns, many statues, wealth of interiors, and majestic golden
dome. .. That we admire from the top of the colonnade (open until 4 am during
sleepless nights).
Statue of Peter I
"Standing in front of the deserted waves, his mind full of
high thoughts, he was staring at the horizon. At his feet, widely, flowed the
river ... "The equestrian statue of Peter the Great became the emblem of
the city after inspiring this poem to Pushkin ( The Brazen Horseman ). A
beautiful place to admire the opening of bridges on the Neva.
Nevsky Prospekt
The best way to capture the soul of the city is to walk on its
main artery! This "avenue of the Neva", designed by Peter the Great,
4.5 km long, connects the Admiralty to Alexander Nevsky Square. Among the
architectural pearls: Chicherin, Stroganov, Anichkov and Belosselski-Belozerski
palaces; many churches, including the majestic Notre-Dame-de Kazan, the elegant
St. Catherine, baroque; Luxurious commercial galleries: Passaj, Gostiny Dvor
and the jewel Elisseyevsky ... To finally see, at the corner of the Moïka, the
Literary Café, former pastry Wolf & Béranger, where Pushkin went just
before his fatal duel with Anthes.
Griboyedov Canal
This timelessly charming canal surrounds the city center.
Straddled by twenty-one bridges, it justifies, with the Moika and the Fontanka,
the comparison of St. Petersburg with Venice ... From the bridge to the Lions
to the typical church of Saint-Sauveur-on-the-Sang-Versé, the ride is superb!
Russian Museum
Russian art, icons of the 12th century. the masterpieces of the
avant-garde (Malevich, Chagall, Kandinsky ...). An exceptional collection in
the splendid interior of the Mikhailovsky Palace (1819-1825).
Summer Garden
The summer garden reopened in 2012 after a major restoration. The
idea of a reconstruction as in the time of Peter the Great
according to period documents guided this project, which remains very
controversial. However, one takes the time to stroll in the alleys adorned with
statues, fountains, pavilions, to appreciate the kitchen garden and the
orangery, the small port wanted by the czar at the edge of the canal ...
Peter and Paul Fortress
The "Hare Island", on the north arm of the Neva, is
considered the cradle of St. Petersburg. It is indeed there that Peter the
Great (who rests in the basilica) decides to build his fortress, in 1703, to
contain the Swedes. The Fortress Island, signaled by the endless spire of its
basilica, houses several museums in its houses and bastions. It is also the
setting, throughout the year, cultural events (Jazz Festival, Festival of music
chimes), sand and ice sculpture competitions, as well as the famous Night of
Museums, when from which are reconstructed historical scenes and battles with
the Vikings.
Laura Alexander Nevsky
The title of "laure" is reserved, in the Russian Orthodox
Church, to the important male monasteries. "Pantheon" of Russia and
rare architectural ensemble of the beginning of the XVIII E S., laure Alexander
Nevsky remains an important place of worship and pilgrimage. It includes the
Church of the Annunciation, the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity (which houses the
relics of Alexander Nevsky), several religious buildings and three cemeteries.
Peterhof
A trip to St. Petersburg
would be incomplete without visiting the Peterhof Palace, even if it is located
25 km from the city center. Erected to be the summer residence of Peter the
Great, it's a masterpiece! From May to October, do not miss the magical
spectacle of great waters. On this occasion: various festivities, concerts and
major cultural events.
St. Isaac's Cathedral / Admiralty / Hermitage
St. Isaac's Cathedral (Isaakievski sobor) watches over St.
Petersburg's historic heart and its baroque and classical monuments, all
restored for the tercentenary of the city, in 2003. The central streets, always
more commercial, radiate around Admiralty. To the north lie the immeasurable
Palace Square and its jewel, the Winter Palace, which houses the valuable
collections of the Hermitage Museum. At the time of the sleepless nights, from
mid-June to the beginning of July, the crowd converges on the banks of the Neva
to admire the unforgettable show of the rising bridges under the midnight sun.
Nevsky Prospect / Summer Garden / Place des Arts
"What is missing from the splendor of this queen of the
streets of our capital? "Asks Nicolas Gogol in his new perspective Nevsky
. On this mythical avenue, a colorful crowd marches day and night, entering and
leaving shops, restaurants and cafes ... In the north, the romantic St.
Petersburg, sung by poets: the summer garden (Letni sad), the Place des Arts
and the small bridges thrown on the canals ... Not to mention the Church of
Saint-Sauveur-on-the-Sang-Pouré, a Neorussian masterpiece. To the south, the
two temples of local commerce: the shopping arcades of Gostiny dvor and the
Apraksin market.
Sennaya Square / Theater Square / Moïka
Dostoyevsky's heroes surely haunt Sennaya Square and its market,
instantly capturing St. Petersburg life. From the shopping street Sadovaya,
just walk along the Griboyedov Canal to discover a Baroque wonder, the St.
Nicholas Cathedral, built for sailors who lived in the district in the
eighteenth century. A stone's throw away, in the Theater Square, you can see
the Mariinsky Theater, where so many Russian stars danced, and the no less
famous conservatory of music. To conclude the walk and admire the most
beautiful palaces of the city, take one of the boat-walk that glide on the
Moïka.
Vassilevsky Island
From the network of canals which, in the eighteenth century, was
to criss-cross Vassilevski Ostrov, the largest island of the Neva delta,
remains only a plan of streets in checkerboard ... The Strelka (arrow), its
eastern point, offers a striking panorama of the river and the city. This
former maritime trade center houses museums, several academies and the
University of St. Petersburg. A true symphony of colors (pink, sky blue, pale
green, red, yellow), the facades of its monuments make us forget that the
arteries are surprisingly empty. You have to push to Vassileostrovskaya metro
station to find some animation.
Peter and Paul Fortress / Petrograd District
In 1703, the construction of the Peter and Paul fortress
(Petropavlovskaya krepost) marked the birth of the city designed by Peter the
Great, and the spire of his basilica became the focal point. But, cut off from
the center, for lack of a bridge, the suburb of Petrograd did not develop until
the end of the 19 th century, and the Art Nouveau soon blossomed on the facades
of the Kamennoostrovski prospect. From the 1990s, the new rich have favored
this neighborhood, and theaters, restaurants and designer fashion shops sprang
up, from the Lva Tolstogo square to the Bolshoi perspective. Further north, the
botanical garden invites to a bucolic stroll.
Fontanka / Smolny / Alexander Alexander Nevsky
To the east of Fontanka,
the city is less touristy. Alternative cultural places, small restaurants,
trendy bars and clubs are proliferating around Nevsky Prospekt and the
Vosstania and Vladimirskaya squares. Remained on the edge of the historic
heart, they display a less conventional taste. To the northeast is the Smolny
Cathedral, a Baroque masterpiece highlighted by a meander of the Neva. While in
the southeast of Nevsky Prospekt, the Alexander Nevsky Lavra, insensitive to
the bustle of the three-hundred-year-old city, forms a timeless enclave in the
midst of soulless buildings.
