ZAYED CHEIKH (1918-2004)
Born in Abu Dhabi in 1918, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al-Nahyan
presided over the destinies of the United Arab Emirates for more than thirty
years, until his death on November 2, 2004. This tribal chief of the Arabian
Peninsula, whose oil one of the most fortunate men in the world, was a monarch
omnipresent in the iconography of his country, a head of state respected in the
Arab world for its fidelity to ancestral values and esteemed by the international community
for its moderation.
With Zayed disappears the ultimate representative of a generation
of Arab rulers imbued with the values and
codes of the Bedouin world, a subtle blend
of loyalty and cunning, a strange alliance of courtesy and violence. If he
attended Koranic school between the ages of seven and nine, he learned in the
desert. He remained a lover of horses and camels all his life, passionate about
hunting and falconry. Wearing the traditional costume, Zayed impressed by his
high stature, his decided bearing, his energetic features, his imperious gaze
tempered by a warm smile. Political end, he combined with skill, authority and
popularity in the framework of a nepotistic regime with tribal legitimacy.
Coming from a powerful tribe from central Arabia, the Bani Yas,
grandson of Zayed ben Khalifa, known as Zayed the Great, who ruled in Abu Dhabi
from 1855 to 1909, Zayed bin Sultan is the youngest of Sultan's four sons Ben
Zayed. The latter, who had succeeded his father as emir of Abu Dhabi, was
stabbed in 1926 by his own brother, Saqr, who seized power before being
assassinated in turn in 1928. The older brother of Zayed, Shakbout was appointed
as emir.
Appointed governor of El Ain, on the eastern borders of the
emirate, Zayed administered this group of oases effectively, improving
irrigation systems, building a market. Explorateur Wilfred Thesiger or
archaeologist Geoffrey Bibby attest to the strong personality and keen
curiosity of young Zayed
