UAE prepares succession for Sheikh Zayed Ben Sultan Al Nahyan
Forty days of national mourning were proclaimed in the United Arab Emirates after the death of Sheikh Zayed Ben Sultan Al Nahyan. The founder of this country, which he led for nearly thirty-three years died Tuesday at the age of 86 years. He had been sick for several years and had a kidney transplant in 2000.
He was to be buried yesterday afternoon, in the presence of many foreign leaders, including Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, Lebanese President Emile Lahoud, Sudanese President Omar Al Bashir, and many other Arab dignitaries.
French President Jacques Chirac expressed "the deep sorrow and emotion" that inspires the disappearance of Sheikh Zayed. Saying himself personally touched by his death, he recalled the relationship "very confident, respectful and affectionate" he had developed with him.
"A man of peace and vision, he has continued to promote the virtues of compromise, reason and dialogue in a region troubled by crises and conflicts. His name will remain closely tied to the cause of peace and development of the Middle East, to which he had dedicated his life ", added the French president in a press release.
Unlike other Arab leaders, Sheikh Zayed was very popular with his people because he had used the fabulous oil revenues of the Emirates to equip his country in road infrastructure, schools, hospitals, free social services and many green spaces. With a GDP of more than 14,500 Euro per capita in 2002, most likely increasing this year due to rising oil prices, the UAE is among the richest countries in the world.
According to the Constitution, the successor of Sheikh Zayed will be appointed within thirty days by the Supreme Federal Council, which includes the sovereigns of the seven emirates of the federation. They should logically name Sheikh Khalifa, the eldest son of the late president, as emir of Abu Dhabi, the federal capital that provides nearly 90% of the federation's crude output.
But the latter, aged 56 and perceived as fragile health, may have to deal with his half-brother, Sheikh Mohammad, eldest son of the favorite of the deceased. The 43-year-old became the new crown prince of Abu Dhabi. Chief of Staff of the Emirates Armies, Sheikh Mohammad, more Westernized than his elder Khalifa, has established himself as an interlocutor listened to abroad. According to a diplomat, the reality of power will be in his hands.
