The spider does
not sting, it bites
In Quebec, there
are several species of spiders living outside or in homes. They are animals of
the order Araneae, of the class of arachnids, which are not insects, because
they have 8 legs and not 6. They are arthropods,
There are about
620 species. Their body consists of two parts, the thorax and the head which is
welded to it, and the belly, at the end of which are the dies which are used to
make the thread for weaving their web.
Spiders usually
have eight eyes, placed in different ways on their heads. The length of life of
spiders is different depending on the species.
The female lays
her eggs in a silk pouch that she hides, or carries with her as for wolf
spiders. The eggs hatch a few weeks later or, depending on the species,
overwinter in this form and hatch only the following spring.
The spider's web
is used to capture living insects that it feeds on. It is a protection for
nature in general, because we would be infested with insects without them.
Some spiders
weave a web, but others do not, because they hunt their prey and catch them in
different ways.
Spiders do not
see all well. Some are oriented with the help of very sensitive hairs on their
legs. The jumping spiders, the salticides, have a good vision in order to
capture their prey.

In Quebec, the
majority of spiders are harmless. In hot countries the bites of some spiders
can have serious consequences, like that of a black widow. Some spiders are
giant like the mygale. They have a repulsive air that gives the spider this bad
reputation.

They say a spider
bite, but they do not sting, they bite, because they have no sting. The spider
bite is usually very small and seems to be a sting, much like some black flies
do.

To control the
presence of spiders in your home, thoroughly seal all cracks, walls, doors, and
windows. If you decide to use an insecticide, seek the help of a professional.
Avoid using outside lighting at night because it attracts them. Inspect the
basement, garage, attic and any place where you have stored, as they are quiet
places they like.

Crab spiders have
larger front legs
The crab spider,
some of which are also known as thomises (Thomisidae), is an invertebrate
animal of the order Arachnida (Arachnida). They are spiders that do not really
weave webs to capture their food, but by chasing them on the lookout.
There are a
multitude of crab spider species, shapes, colors, sizes ... but we will
especially notice those yellow or white, which perch on the flowers until a
prey passes.
Like other
spiders, they have a large abdomen, sometimes uniform, with stripes, lines or
colored drawings depending on the species.
The eight legs
are attached to the thorax, and they are provided with hooks, those of front
being larger. The paw is often hairy, perhaps of uniform color, or wear bands
of different colors.
Like other
spiders, they are carnivorous animals, and they only eat what they captured
during their hunt. The majority remain motionless on flowers of the same color
as his body. This is why we often observe the crab spider on flowers with
petals similar in color to itself, which gives it an excellent camouflage.
When a fly, or
any other insect likely to be a prey, goes to fortify the flower, the crab
spider catches it and bites it by injecting it with a venom to paralyze it. Its
bite is not dangerous to humans, and usually causes only irritation. Then, she
can drag her prey to the shelter to consume it.

Their camouflage
is used for hunting as well as hiding from predators. Some, like the mis leads
variable (Misumena vatia), can change color slightly, from yellow to white, to
better be confused with its environment.
They are called
crab spiders, because of their larger front legs and how to post themselves in
hunting position. She supports her body on her hind legs, and her front legs
are raised in the air, like those of a crab. In this way, she can quickly
launch on her prey with her forelegs, and use the front ones, longer and
already in position, to capture the insecure insect.

After breeding,
the female will produce a small bag that contains the eggs. When small spiders
come out of the egg, they are identical to adults, except for very small sizes.
Crab spiders also
have predators, which are mainly birds, other spiders, toads and other
predatory insects like mason wasps that capture them to feed them to their
larvae.
