THE VULTURE
Physical description
The vultures are birds forming two families, the cathartidae and
the accipitridae. From the end of one wing to the other, they can measure up to
2.80 m. They have a long neck, featherless head and a very powerful beak that
allows them to cut their prey. They have long wings and some species have long
claws bent at the fingertips. Their plumage can be dark brown or black,
depending on the species.
His place of life
Vultures can be found in the forests, meadows and deserts of
Africa, America and Europe.
His diet
The vulture feeds mainly on the remains of dead animals. Some
species such as the red-headed urubu can, on rare occasions, consume plants.
His reproduction
In several species of vulture, females lay 1-3 eggs on the ground,
in a cliff, in the hollow of a rock or tree. The African vulture on the other
hand builds its nest at the top of the trees. In all cases, the eggs are
hatched by both parents and after 30 to 60 days (depending on the species) the
chicks hatch. To feed them, the adults take food out of their stomachs. After
about 4 months, the chicks leave the nest.
His life expectancy
Vultures can live up to 35 years in the wild and 40 years in
captivity.
The cry of the vulture
Vultures emit grunts when they are hungry and wheeze when they feel
threatened.
Particular signs
The vultures have a very developed view and smell, allowing them to
remotely locate the dead animals they feed on.
