THE VIPER

Physical description
Vipers are a sub-family of snakes of which there are nearly 100 species. A viper usually measures between 40 and 90 cm. His body is covered from head to tail with small scales. Its color varies greatly. Indeed there is gray, yellow, red or black, with different types of patterns on the back. Its head has a triangular shape and is more or less flat. The pupil of the eye is vertical in shape, like a slit. His tail is visibly different from the rest of the body because it appears as a tip.

His place of life
We meet vipers in Africa, Asia and Europe. They are found in dry places, with little vegetation, often at high altitude. Throughout the winter, they take refuge in natural galleries, about 30 cm in the ground.

His diet
Vipers feed on small mammals, lizards, insects and small rodents.

His reproduction
Viper eggs develop in the body of the female. It is said that she is ovoviviparous. After about 3 months, she lays 5 to 20 eggs. Just after laying, the viper pierces the egg. A few hours later, he will experience his first moult.

His life expectancy
Depending on its species, a viper can live between 6 and 30 years.

The cry of the viper
The viper can whistle when she feels unsafe and is about to attack.

Particular signs
Vipers are venomous, but their bite is not always fatal.
