The importance of drinking
water
Water is a basic need and
every one of us is clean water. But for nearly a billion people, this promise
is not yet fulfilled. They live without drinking water. The land is experiencing
a real water crisis. Sub-Saharan Africa, South-East Asia and South America are
the most affected by this problem.
WITHOUT WATER, NO PROGRESS
Water affects everything:
education, health, poverty and especially the lives of women and children. A
person from an average family affected by the water crisis does not have a tap
at home to drink a glass of pure water. Instead, to access the water, women and
children travel for miles.
Many women and children to
reach the nearest spring or river, often infected with all kinds of bacteria.
In addition to the weight of cans and heat, they are exposed to the threat of
wildlife and sexual violence. The time they take to fetch water, they can not
read, write, earn money or take care of the family.
Many families know that they
consume unsafe water and that it causes diarrhea, cholera, dehydration or even
death. But what choice do they have? Children, especially those in infancy, are
the first victims. Indeed, every 19 seconds, a woman loses a child, a
consequence of a disease related to water. This is the daily reality for nearly
a billion people.
GIVES CHANCE TO WOMEN AND
CHILDREN
In all its food security
projects, Caritas International devotes specific attention to access to safe
water. Because drinking water is synonymous with health, education, food and
income, especially for women and children.
When we build water
facilities for communities, we free women and children from their yoke. They
find a little freedom. Children can go to school. The women have time to take care
of the house and the vegetable garden to support their family. They are given
the chance to take a training course, join the water committee or start a
business to earn a little more money.
