General framework

Lebanon has a population of 4.6 million and has a nominal GDP of $ 52 billion in 2016. Approximately 1 million Syrian refugees are registered in Lebanon with UNHCR.

After reaching around 8% a year on average from 2006 to 2011, Lebanon's GDP has fluctuated between 1.5% and 2.5% per year since 2011. The geopolitical situation directly affects political life and the Lebanese economy. Indeed, regional tensions have contributed to the blocking of political institutions resulting in a long period of institutional vacuum.

Today, the Lebanese economic situation remains dependent on the regional environment, and in particular on the evolution of the Syrian conflict, the direct and indirect consequences of which it suffers. Lebanon must manage both the influx of refugees (whether Syrian or Palestinian), the decline of tourism, the marked sluggishness of growth, the rise of the public deficit and the public debt. Despite this situation, the Lebanese private sector remains resilient.

With a trade volume of 934 M € in 2016 (French exports to Lebanon: 886 M €, French imports from Lebanon: 48 M €), France is the eighth largest supplier in Lebanon (3.8% share market) and his fourteenth client. About a hundred French companies are established in Lebanon in various sectors, such as agribusiness, telecommunications and financial services. More than 4,500 French companies exported to Lebanon in 2016, an increase of 11% over 2006.
