Fish is an animal that breathes with gills
Fish are vertebrate animals that live in the water. A
large number of small fish feed on insects that fall into the water, and some
are caught flying. Of course many eat other fish smaller than them or seaweed.
The fish breathes with gills, usually on each side of
the head, behind the mouth. The gills capture oxygen from the water when it is
in motion. The water enters the mouth, passes through the gills and leaves
through the slots of it. In this way, the fish can open and close the mouth to
circulate the water in the gills without having to move.
Fish are cold-blooded animals, some can live in very
cold waters. Some are only suitable for warm water.
In the same way, fish that live in fresh water can not
survive in salt water. Freshwater fish can not live in seawater, and those in
the sea can not live in freshwater because they are not suitable for it.
Fish lay eggs to reproduce, and they usually lay a
large amount of them to ensure the survival of a few individuals. Some fish,
such as salmon, will die after laying. Often spawning or mating is done in the
same place, and fishing is often prohibited during this period, and fishing out
of season is poaching.

The fish swim with fins and tail. The tail is its main
thruster, the fins being used to stabilize it. Some fish have spines with some
fins, often the dorsal fin, as a defense. The skin of fish is made of scales.
Fish are adapted to their environment. Those who live
at very great depths have almost useless eyes, but will use the vibrations to
detect their prey. The plaice has both eyes on the same side as it floats flat
on the bottom of the water. Like terrestrial animals, fish have undergone
natural selection and some have acquired specialties.
Some fish are predators, like pike. They usually have
a mouth with teeth, which opens at the front of the head. Others have their
mouths under their heads because they eat what is in the bottom of the water,
like the carp.
Fish is a big source of food for many animals, be they
reptiles, birds and many mammals. The water in which they live is like our air,
and the pollution of the water is very harmful to the fish. Pollution must be
avoided and the fishing rules respected.
