Excerpt from Traveler's Guide Kenya
Well served by an international airport, the Kenyan capital is surprising by its high standard of living and its highly developed tourist infrastructure. But just leave it and travel to Lake Turkana, home to one of the world's most important palaeontological sites, for a journey back in time to the origins of man.
The Kenyan relief is original in that its plateaus are torn from north to south by the bulging and collapsing of the old crystalline basement forming the Rift Valley. Vertiginous escarpments surround this vast fault: the Mau Escarpement in the west and the Aberdare in the east. Like a sentinel, the highest of these ancient volcanic landforms, Mount Kenya, dominates the main agricultural region of the country. The Rift Collapse valley is dotted with lakes - Turkana, Baringo, Hannington, Nakuru, Naivasha, Magadi - and its nature is protected within extensive national parks and reserves.
It is from Nairobi that most safaris leave, which branch out into several circuits. Grand spectacle await the traveler in the Masai Mara National Reserve, especially during the seasonal migration of some 2 million wildebeest flocking Serengeti; in Amboseli National Park, deployed in the shadow of Kilimanjaro (Tanzania); or in both Tsavo, a vast territory that extends freely to the coast.
If it is impossible to list in one page all the jewels of the Kenyan nature, do not forget the magnificent coastal fringe of more than 400 km in length and its paradisiacal beaches of fine sand and white, its luxurious seaside resorts ultramodern , its marine parks protecting coral reefs, its ports finally: Lamu, with the old-fashioned but irresistible charm, Malindi, where will be remembered the passage of Vasco de Gama, Mombasa, the second port of the east coast of Africa, who still lives to the rhythm of the dhows (dhows).

Lake Nakuru National Park

Reposoir for more than 400 species of birds - mostly migratory -, the shores of the lake is adorned, at the beginning of the austral winter, thousands, sometimes even millions, of flamingos and pelicans, offering from the top of the Baboon Cliff a sparkling show.

Samburu-Buffalo Springs National Reserve

Watered by the Ewaso Ngiro River that separate the two reserves, the arid plains are populated by a specific fauna, including Waller's gazelle, or generuk (Litocranius walleri) and the endemic Grevy zebras, reticulated giraffes and ostriches of Somalia.

Lamu

High place of Swahili culture, the old island city-state retains all its character of yesteryear: labyrinthine alleys, heavy finely chiseled doors, shutters and moucharabiehs concealing interior patios ... To discover on foot or by donkey, the only mode of transport on the island.

Masai Mara National Reserve

Bordering the Tanzanian Serengeti, this hilly region sees, between June and mid-August, the endless migration of hundreds of thousands of wildebeests fleeing the Tanzanian drought for the cooler pastures of the Masai-Mara savannah.

Amboseli National Park

With its vast expanses of savannah and swampy meadows, and in the background, the majestic silhouette of Kilimanjaro, this biosphere reserve on the border of Tanzania boasts of its herd of elephants, wildebeest, zebras, buffaloes and gazelles grazing peacefully under the amazed eyes of photographers and other safarists.

Lake Turkana

On the northern edge of the country bordering the Rift Valley, this lake region remains the land of the proud and irreducible Turkana as well as that of El Molo fishermen.

Diana Beach

Protected by a coral reef, its 13km of shaded white sand and cradled by the zephyr of the Indian Ocean, are a real invitation to idleness.

Ol Pejeta Ranch

This private park, easily accessible from Laikipia Plateau, is home to the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary, the only asylum for orphaned chimpanzee babies in Kenya, founded in 1993.

Watamu

In addition to its beautiful coral beach, this seaside resort of Turtle Bay is an ideal base to discover the remains of Gedi, medieval Swahili city, buried under the foliage of the Arabuko-Sokoke Forest.

Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park

Off the south coast, 4 coral islands form this 39 km 2 reserve where you will have the opportunity to dive among a myriad of turtles, dolphins, moray eels and, depending on the season, humpback whales and whale sharks.

Accommodation

The majority of visitors spend most of their time on safari; in this area, the choice of accommodation is plethoric - at the last point, the Masai Mara alone has more than 50 lodges and camps. The quality of the observation circuits depends directly on the location of the lodge. Check out the list below and discuss your priorities with experienced safari tour operators.
Two types of accommodation coexist on reserves. The most classic, belonging to chains such as Sopa, Sarova and Serena, are mainly for groups of travelers and take the form of large lodges in the bush. Their atmosphere, the high level of comfort and the solidity of the buildings are ideal for both novice and elderly visitors.
An increasingly wide range of small camps with 5 to 20 rooms offers an interesting alternative to these lodges. They offer tents with bathrooms, large enough to stand up, or bandas (huts or cottages). These camps blend into the bush to totally immerse their guests in the African atmosphere. Their decoration is surprisingly trendy. Some exude luxury, catering almost exclusively to airline guests, with experienced guides offering all kinds of activities.
In Nairobi, and to a lesser extent in some of the more modest or coastal cities, tourist accommodations are mostly urban multi-storey hotels, not far from what you find elsewhere in the world. The Hilton, InterContinental and Fairmont chains are well represented in the capital. Recently, smaller hotels have opened on the outskirts of major cities, like Giraffe Manor. Their atmosphere oscillates between bush camp and boutique hotel.
On the Kenyan coast, the majority of foreign tourists stay in the resorts bordering the beautiful beaches of Diani, Watamu, Malindi and North Mombasa. Most of them sumptuous, they all offer beaches fringed with palm trees, huge swimming pools, succulent seafood and villa or hotel type accommodations. More and more of them are now offering housing that looks more like a bush camp.
Almost all institutions charge high prices by international standards. Between the expensive hotels and cheap and uninviting guesthouses that proliferate in the small towns, accommodations in the mid-range category are rather rare. The city of Lamu, home to some of the country's most attractive urban curiosities, is an exception: it is the only place in Kenya where tourists can stay in small guesthouses.
If you want to stay independent, opt for the fairly inexpensive bandas run by Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS) inside and outside many parks and reserves. Often they look like simple cottages with bed linens, towels, gas cookers and cooking utensils. The KWS website (www.kws.org) offers the complete list, with prices and booking schedule. Kenya has no formal ranking system for hotels and lodges.

Price categories

Prices are for a double room and are based on official rates advertised in US dollars; they are often higher than those charged by travel agencies or those shown online - many hotels offer great rates if you book through their website, especially in a very short time. In national parks and private reserves, tariffs for lodges and tent camps almost always include all meals and, for the most luxurious of them, activities and / or drinks. Most hotels and coastal resorts offer a standard package including dinner and breakfast; some club complexes also include lunch and drinks. In the city, most hotels only offer overnight stays and breakfast; some also offer full board rates, in particular a handful of luxury hotels exclusively for tourists. Some very few establishments publish their rates without breakfast. If in doubt, check what the service includes when you book and again when you arrive.
