Physical description
Smaller than a wolf but larger than a dog,
the coyote is between 75 cm and 1 meter long; it weighs between 7 and 20 kg,
the female being smaller than the male. Its tail is short, its muzzle tapered,
its truffle narrow, its coat flush with a down that protects it from the cold.
The coyote is also known for its big ears.
His place of life
The coyote lives in a den. Its adaptability
to different environments, even in urban areas, has allowed the coyote to
expand its territory and to survive the hunt for humans. Because of its ability
to live near humans, the coyote causes damage: this is the reason why he is
hunted down or even poisoned by man. But this situation does not prevent it
from continuing to spread throughout the American territory: deserts, mountains,
forests and outskirts of cities.
His diet
A solitary animal, the coyote eats
everything it finds, turning into a scavenger in the winter, if it is hungry.
He can eat hares (his favorite prey), rabbits, mice, rats, beavers, snakes,
ripe fruits, soya, but also human waste. Coyotes live in small groups in areas
with low prey, allowing them to tackle larger prey such as deer, elk and
caribou. The coyote is an essentially nocturnal animal, hunting at night.
His reproduction
Although lonely, the coyote can live as a
couple. The rutting period is from January to March; births take place between
April and May. Each litter is composed of 6 young on average, but it can vary
from 2 to 12 coyote babies. The father works for the well-being and survival of
his family.
His life expectancy
The coyote lives on average 14 years.
The cry of the coyote
The coyote grunts to intimidate. But he has
many vocalizations: barking (like a dog), yapping (like a puppy), howling (like
a wolf). He also has a body language that allows him to be understood.
Particular signs
The man is a great predator of coyotes: he
hunts for his fur but also tries to exterminate him to move away from the
residential areas.
