 The flagship is an American insect

The Admiral Butterfly is recognized by the white stripes that adorn its two pairs of black wings and that have earned its name. They are from the family of Nymphalidae.

Its two rear wings are blue and orange-red. It measures approximately 47 to 78 mm from one wingtip to the other. The female is identical although larger.

The Admiral's mating takes place during the summer. In June-July, the female lays her eggs on a leaf.

Five to seven days later, the caterpillar comes out of the egg. She will feed on the plant where she has just been born.

In the autumn after her second moult, she builds a shelter with a sheet that she rolls and ties with a silk thread. She hides there and will spend the winter there.

In spring the caterpillar leaves its shelter and continues to grow. In early June it will become a chrysalis and will remain in this form for 2 weeks, then eventually become the adult insect.

The Admiral butterfly inhabits deciduous forests, clearings and the edge of streams. It is found throughout Eastern Canada and Mexico.

To feed, he sucks liquid from the ripe fruits, corpses of mammals and fish.

Its enemies are the birds that make it their food. Their life does not last more than a year.
