THE JAGUAR

Physical description
The jaguar is an animal with furs spotted with black and brown on a white dress. His beautiful figure, his touching face and his little round ears hide a fearsome cat, a ferocious predator. Males weigh between 50 and 100 kilograms; females weigh between 40 and 70 kilograms.

His place of life
The jaguar lives in dense forests, where the vegetation is bushy. A magnet for moisture and water, it is very present in South America, in the tropical forests of Venezuela, Ecuador, Honduras, Argentina and Nicaragua. The jaguar is a good swimmer.

His diet
The jaguar is a carnivorous animal: its strength and weight give it an ascendant on more than 85 animal species. Thus, he can eat turtles, frogs but also caimans and monkeys. To feed, he avoids hunting during the day, preferring dawn, dusk and night.

His reproduction
The female jaguar can breed in all seasons, from the age of 2 years. Gestation lasts between 91 and 111 days: each litter consists of 2 to 4 jaguar babies, each weighing about 800 grams. At birth, jaguar babies are blind for the first 2 weeks.
The couple separates after the reproduction: it is the female who deals then alone with the young.

His life expectancy
The jaguar lives between 12 and 15 years in its natural environment. He is one of the felines with the highest life expectancy.

Cry of the jaguar
The jaguar roars: its cry resounds in the tropical forests. But you must know that a jaguar is silent. He can spend whole days without making any noise: at most, he grumbles.

Particular signs
The jaguar is an endangered mammal: its highly sought-after skin for its decorative beauty has favored poaching.

It is bigger and more massive than the leopard.
