 the turtle

There are about 300 species of turtles that can be divided into three major families: marine, aquatic and terrestrial. Although abundant in the tropics, their species is now threatened with extinction.

Turtles are among the animals that can live the longest, but centenarians are exceptions. They have a life expectancy of about fifty years. The longevity record is held by "advaita" this giant turtle from Seychelles has reached 225 years.

The turtles are part of the family of reptiles, it is a cold-blooded animal. It should be known that a regulation regarding the purchase of a turtle (most species) exists in France. The purchase of these animals is strongly discouraged because it is in the interest of the species.

The freshwater turtles are the species that has the most developed senses, it is very profitable to them since they are true hunters. Their weak point is undoubtedly their low visual acuity since they only perceive a spectrum ranging from orange to red. They thus detect the movements through the vibrations of water for example. Sometimes they can determine a heat zone to locate a being.

Sea turtles have a very particular characteristic, namely a sense of unprecedented orientation. This is probably due to the presence of magnetite in some of their cells.

Food

The diet differs according to the species; so certain are carnivorous, other omnivorous and the most widespread are herbivorous.

The majority of land turtles are vegetarians, their food consists of fruits, plants, and even small snails. One advises to avoid giving them foods such as meat, fish, or food for dogs or cats, which they will eat but which is very dangerous for their health!
