Caribou and reindeer

The Caribou and the Reindeer are of the same species, but the two do not belong to the same race. Both wear very thick fur, which is why they can live in excessively cold regions. In America they are called Caribous, while in Europe they are called Rennes.

The color of her dress varies according to her age, the young are pale gray while the adults are dark brown with white patches on the legs, neck and belly.
His long hair gives him a possibility of floating in the water, he swims easily and quickly. Its fur turns pale in winter and it also thickens to protect it from the cold and the wind. His muzzle is flat and his ears short. Both are covered with hair.

From his first year the little one has two small bumps on his head, in the following years male or female will carry very hard woods.

The Caribou has long, slender legs that end in large hooves that make it easier to walk on snow and in swamps.

Caribou live in northern regions. It has no shelter, it is its fur and its fat that protect it from bad weather and cold weather.

It feeds on plants, tree bark, moss mushrooms and herbs. His preference, however, goes to lichens, but in winter he has to dig with his hooves to find his favorite dish. He can dig holes one meter deep to find the lichen. It feeds mostly in the morning and evening. In the afternoon he rests and ruminates.

In July the flock begins a long journey south to arrive in September to the forest where it will spend the winter.

The strongest males have females around them, but this is not done without fighting with other males playing plume. Injuries are rare though. During this period the males become nervous and the chosen females as well as the males burn. Once the rut is finished the silence settles.

In the spring the return to the north begins and it is the pregnant females and the young ones who open the march. During this journey, the females give birth to their young. The baby stands on its feet a few hours after birth and from then on he eats herbs and lichens.
His mother will suckle it until another baby is born the next spring.

Male and female reach sexual maturity around 2 1/2 years of age. The gestation period lasts about 240 days. Many children do not survive the cold climate.
Its main predators are the lynx and the wolf. A wolf can kill 10 to 15 caribou a year, according to specialists.
The lifespan of Caribou is 12 to 15 years but in captivity it can live up to 20 years.
