The annual population growth rate is 1.22% (2017). This rate is slightly higher than that of the United States, the difference between the two countries comes mainly from the birth rate, higher in the United States.
In 2016, the country has for the first time in its history exceeded 36 million inhabitants, reaching 36.7 million inhabitants in 2017.
Population growth is mainly in major cities: Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Ottawa. These large cities of more than one million people are home to almost half of the country's total population. The two western provinces, British Columbia and Alberta, have been in the forefront of population growth for two decades. They are catching up with the central provinces of Ontario, the most populous province in the country, and Quebec, both of which remain the economic, industrial, cultural and political heart of Canada.
Canada
Ranked third in the OECD for quality of life, Canada is also the eleventh largest economy in the world. It benefits from immense natural resources, a skilled workforce, excellent technological development and a stable political and economic environment.
Multicultural by its history and its immigrants, the French language develops towards the west of the country, traditionally Anglophone. With more than 35 million people, Canada welcomes 250,000 immigrants every year. These newcomers mainly choose Ontario to settle, followed by Quebec and the western provinces.
With growth of 2.6% in 2011 and 1.8% in 2012, the Canadian economy is doing well despite high household debt.
In the years to come, Canada's infrastructure needs are considerable in many sectors of its economy, including natural resource development.

The EU and Canada announced the establishment of a Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) on October 18, 2013. Negotiations on this free trade agreement lasted almost five years.
