Has the father-daughter relationship changed a lot?
Didier Lauru: The social reality has evolved considerably. Fathers no longer have the same power, they share parental authority with the mother, who can now pass on her name, and are more present with children. But in fantasy, he remains the main support of authority. The big voice, the forbidden, it's him.
And the young women I receive have the idea that they need their approval to validate their choices, especially in love. If they do not need a formal authorization, they do not want to displease him.

In your book, Father-Daughter, you explore the connection between the father's gaze on his daughter and the fulfillment of the latter.
Didier Lauru: I was indeed struck by the insistence with which women, on the couch, evoke the look of their father, in the true sense of the word. As if this look, alternately tinged with love or disappointment, admiration or reprobation, was a kind of barometer of their relationship. As if there was also a link between the quality of this look and the difficulties they encountered in their love life or their sexuality. What I wanted to show in this book, through various accounts of analysis, is how the father, in the manner of a sculptor in front of a block of stone, anticipated the woman in the making in the little girl and the child. helped to happen. Her look, more or less rewarding, is what will allow her to fulfill her femininity or, on the contrary, will prevent it.

Does not the mother have at least equal responsibility in this area?

Didier Lauru: It is she who, in the beginning, gives the little girl the security base she needs to grow, she who will teach him to be a woman to a man. But the father will be the ideal man of his imagination, the one whose look she will seek in her future loves, this first look of a man resting on her. Whether his partner looks like Dad or if he is exactly the opposite, he is the one who will have been the reference.
