Introduction:
Being currently a student at HEM Business school, I was in the
obligation to perform an immersion training; I opted to do it at the Calliope
center in Casablanca, Mâarif. This internship took place over a period of five
weeks, from 12th January to 12th February during which I developed my English
language skills.
During the second year, students are required to complete a language
course of four to five weeks. The objective of this internship is to enable us
to strengthen the communication capacities of English language students and to
develop a reflection on that experience.
Also, to write an internship report, we were in the obligation to
collect a variety of information about the center and have an observer and
critical of the environment around us. The preparation of this report's main
source different lessons from the daily practice of classes, to which I was
assigned as the many communications I had with my classmates and teachers which
allowed me to give coherence to this report.
I chose Calliope among many options I had because a friend of mine
suggested to me because she spent her internship there, the second reason was
their program proposition, this program was:
1.Professional English:

future career via information technology and interactive methods.

presenting projects, taking part in meetings, negotiating and marketing.

world through activities with native speakers and get prepared to integrate
into international businesses.
4.Company visit:

explained by professionals.

Entertainment is part of our English immersion programme.

CHAPTER TWO:
Organisation and progress of the courses:
I started my first week in Calliope with a test during one hour on
Tuesday. 45 minutes of written test, I had 100 questions about grammar,
vocabulary and comprehension, and one question in writing after I choose a
topic and finally I had 15 minutes of oral test where I response on many
questions with Mr. Harvey.
This test was very important to determine our level; the teachers
consider each level to act with us appropriately.
Our English immersion program comprises about four different classes
animated by four teachers (Mr. Ayoub, Mr. Harvey, Ms. Autumn and Mr. Marcello)
many of them the English it’s a native language, they had a big experience in
teaching. We really had fun with them. Our first class, I met new friends, we
had a commonality, they all study at HEM in exception of one student, she
prepared for her BULATS. We introduced ourselves, then we had our first lesson,
we learned how to introduce ourselves in many situations at school interview
and job interview and to let it funny we did it for a date.
Business English:
This class was very important for me because it was compatible with my
orientation and studies. Clearly, many of the English words used in business
are specialised and would not be understood even by many native English
speakers. Part of studying Business English is to study the vocabulary of
business, which may itself be further specialised by activity or industry
(banking, investment, import-export, oil, motor industry etc).
The teacher was Mr. Ayoub, he had an experience in some companies in
Brazil, Turkey so he had chosen because of this. He was also a cool teacher, he
shared with us his experiences and his travels.
This class was the most important one, the number of hours was very
high. The manual was a book named “Cambridge English: Business BENCHMARK” it
was very rich of lessons, also we used a videos in internet.
We studied a Business vocabulary, Grammar lessons, how to write (CV,
E-mail, Report, etc), we had different units:
In the first week, I discovered some jobs and departments and we
discussed about it, in the end of this class we watched a video about
undercover Boss and we discussed about the situation of the video and we shared
our opinions about the TV reality.
Then, I learned more about jobs and departments in the company because
we described them and we did some exercises about it, after this we discussed
about different uses of computer and his necessity for some jobs and for our
daily arrangement. Also we studied a text about The power of word of mouse and
it was really important and rich of information.
I learned also how to write an e-mails in two forms: Formal and
Informal.
We moved to a new unit, the company culture. We learned a new business
vocabulary in this unit, the important things to success a business, how to
make a company a good place to work and this is done with the teamwork, and we
learned how every company has a different culture and it’s improved with their
style of management and with the managers with some examples of enterprises.
The next unit was distribution and delivery we construct new ideas, all
the things about it and we did a lot of exercises for practice. Also we wrote a
report after the company’s visit and we learned how to write it, everyone read
it and the teacher corrected.
We studied in the business English course new grammar lessons with many
exercises, a new unit with a new objective: Advertising and Marketing the
objective was to improve our vocabulary and we learned their advantages.
We celebrated a birthday of Mr.
Ayoub and this is a prove to our integration and that helped us to keep our
motivation and study in a friendly ambiance, and because Mr. Harvey didn’t come
this day we had 3 hours with him and we chose some topics to discuss we aimed
to improve our communication and we played some educational games, it was very
funny. In the last class we had an oral test, and we must present about the
conference “the generation in the workplace” animated by Mr. Bouabid a HR
Manger that I will talked about in one of the next chapters.
We also did many tests and we had a final exam in Business English, we
had as written exam and an oral one.
Finally, we had a general review with Mr. Ayoub about what we learned,
we prepared all of us the presentation for the final ceremony in a good
ambiance.
Communicate in English with confidence:
This class was animated by Mr. Harvey and it was a very interested.
The objective of this class was to Facing professionals and / or
speaking in public will be a piece of cake for us. Also to be self-confident in
any situation.
I learned new words and expressions of negotiations because it was the
first Unit, I learned how to negotiate and we discussed together about it.
After we listened to some audios about negotiation. Finally, we had a role play
in this unit.
After, we learned how to discuss about some situation reliable with the
company, for example: the reason to employee might get fired and why a company
might go bankrupt... After, I practiced
with my classmates a role plays how to do in this situation.
Then, I developed either my business vocabulary with a new lessons and
topics, and we worked about how to do a good presentation because it’s very
important for us as a student and for a future manager.
I learned about the different kind of trip (Luxurious, backpacking and
the business one), their important for a manager and them add value for him.
We had a course with Mr. Harvey and we played a role-play about a
negotiation, and mine was about selling a car with some types and characters
with my colleagues.
Now I feel I Communicate in English with confidence because of this role
plays.
Finally, we were in the obligation to choose and present a topic then
develop in a mini conference with my colleagues, my presentation was about
Christopher McCandless, I presented his story and it was successful. This
presentation was marked by the teacher and by others classmates.
This class was very interesting because I learned how to communicate
better when socialising, presenting projects, taking part in meetings,
negotiating and marketing.
English language skills:
This class was animated by Mr. Marcello, in the first we classed an
objective to develop our language skills especially in communication.
We debated about hosting the world cup and we studied the last version
in Rio De Janeiro, and if we support or opposite it with giving arguments. We
watched a video of a manifestation in Brazil and how some people don’t agree
with the World Cup and others agreeing with. After we started the debate and I
was with hosting the competition.
Then, we studied an example of an investment plan and how to make a good
one and its importance for the business, and how to make a decision after a
discussion in a meeting, we discussed about some situation for the company in
role play. We played it like we were in a company.
We studied also how to make a good presentation with some rich
arguments, the important thing is the confidence and the contents because it’s
not easy to convince a jury in a while minutes to accept our projects. We did
the exercise to convince a jury composed of teacher and my classmates and it
was very interesting.
We developed our vision in advertising and marketing with new concepts
and their function and what’s the best one, we studied many examples of this
advertise from videos and the impact of some of them.
Three important units in this class
Culture & Civilization:
This class was my best one because here we discovered the peculiarities
of English-speaking cultures around the world through activities with native
speakers and get prepared to integrate into international businesses.
It was animated by Ms. Autumn, it was formed of grammar lessons, English
idioms, words in American English and British English, we discovered new
countries, and their native people, their culture (Food, way of life, etc.),
the famous places, and the most influential people there and finally a new
concept of a Fair Trade and how a new year’s evening is celebrated in a
different country.
We had test every week about thirty minutes about what we learned and
that helped us to be updated of the lessons.
We traveled in our classroom with Ms. Autumn to discover some new
counties every week.
I learned a new lessons of grammar (present perfect, comparative and
superlative...), and we studied a new culture and civilization of the Great
Britain, especially England (Tourism, art, monument, geography, accent and
food, festivals, historical places, etc.).
We traveled with Ms. Autumn to discover some new counties this week,
they were Wales, Ireland, Australia and New-Zealand: Their foods, famous
places, native people, capitals, festivals… We learned new British idioms and
grammar lesson.
Also, we studied others countries (Canada, U.S., Jamaica) their culture,
everyday life, capitals, Native American, music & sports Reggae, Bob
Marley…
The most influential people was Nelson Mandela, Gandhi, Bob Marley,
Chris Martin we studied how they live and their projects for humanity.
Then we did a final exam, it was as a written exam and presentation of a
project chosen with a partner and we chose to talk about Vikings, they culture,
trade and they lifestyle, it was successful and Ms. Autumn chose us to present
it in the ceremony.
CHAPTER THREE:
Company visits:
In the company visit context, we visited MarsaMaroc and it was very
interesting because we had learned many information about the company and their
activities.
We were welcomed by the manager of communication and she presented to us
the company, we visited together the private port of Casablanca.
I wrote a report:
“We went in January 27th, 2016 to the company of Marsa Maroc and we
visited the private port.
In the first we were received by
the manager of communication, she presented the company and their activities
and she has been using a big plan of the port. The information that I noted its
the number of the employees there are more than 2000 employees, they are
located in 9 ports (Casablanca, Tanger Med, Safi, Mohammedia, Nador, etc.)
Marsa Maroc is the main operator
of ports in Morocco. Its legal status is a “Société Anonyme” with an Executive
board chaired by “Mohammed Abdeljalil” and a Supervisory board chaired by the
minister of Equipment and Transport. The official company name is “Société
d'Exploitation des Ports” while Marsa Maroc is its trading name.
They have a thousands of containers and big machines to put these
containers in the ships.
Marsa Maroc is a company of
logistic who organizes some activities in the port and its responsible of the
infrastructure. They share the port with the office of phosphate OCP and the
Marines.
They have also a big park of car, the first and the only one in Africa.
Finally, it was a new experience with this company who handle the port
of Casablanca.”
I noticed by myself the importance of mastering Business English because
we had the discussion in English with the manager of communication.
CHAPTER FOUR:
Conference:
In February 4th,2016 we had a guest in Calliope, he was Mr.
NoureddineBouabid the HR manager from Les domainesAgricoles, he presented to us
a conference.
The topic of the conference was “the generation in the workplace” and it
was very interested and we had the chance to question him about his job as a HR
Manager.
In the first place, he presented a definition of generations and the
different kind of generations (traditionalists, Baby boomers, Generation X,
Generation Y).
Then he talked about generations differences and some events and
experiences that shaped generations.
He talked about the generations in the workplace, their attitudes and
some conflicts between them.
At last, he talked about bridging the generation gaps and I remembered
the Golden Rule:
“Treat others as you would like to be treated.” We can change it to the
Platinum Rule:
“Treat others as they would like to be treated.”
I developed many new ideas about his intervention:
I learned how to Identify characteristics and gain a better understanding
of the four generations
Also I learned the necessity to improve communications and team work and
how to accept personal responsibility in working together.
Finally, I learned how to provide suggestions for overcoming
generational differences.
Cultural activities:
Tuesday 09/02/2016, we were accompanied with the staff and our teachers
to Le Barry Club, we played together, we did some activities as a paintball,
horse ride, etc. We had fun and a nice ambiance. One day just in English and
that was never to be forgotten. We were in the obligation to speak just with
English, we were singing English songs, we translate some Moroccan songs and it
was funny.
Entertainment is part of our English immersion programme and we had it
the chance in this English day.
CONCLUSION:
On the whole, this internship was a useful experience. I have gained new
knowledge, skills and met many new people. I achieved several of my learning
goals.
In the beginning I had to face many obstacles: new work environment, new
classmates and new teaching methods, but I was able to get over it by the help
of my teachers as well as my determination.
Related to my study I learned more about the language (Vocabulary,
communication, Grammar, etc.). There is still a lot to discover and to improve.
The internship was also good to find out what my strengths and
weaknesses are. This helped me to define what skills and knowledge I have to
improve in the coming time. It would be better to develop my knowledge level of
the language until it will be sufficient to contribute to success my future. It
would also be better if I can present and express myself more confidently.
I would like once again to appreciate everyone who has made my
internship a superb experience. And if I had the chance to repeat it, I will do
it without hesitation.
At last this internship has given me new insights and motivation, It’s
just a first step, the first step it’s always the hardest and I get it.
