about happiness
Freedom of choice is intrinsically important in the appreciation
of the happiness of others - and thus offers a response to the problem posed by
the "poor satisfied" or "complacent wife". It is therefore
a component of all good life. The "choice" in question here is the
ability to make a non-arbitrary selection between available options. This
choice is not an abstract selection power of an option but the ability to
develop plans and intentions, to initiate and to take action. It also includes
the ability to do the best of oneself or the ability to exercise one's reason
and will. This "personal power of choice" expresses the positive
freedom of the individual. Thus freedom, even if it is exclusively internal,
like that of Marcus Aurelius, is a decisive component of individual well-being.
Empirical evidence reflects this intuition: Individuals recognize that certain
dimensions of freedom - such as the ability to choose, personal autonomy - are
essential dimensions, indispensable to being happy.
This freedom is positively conceived from an association between
internal capacities and external opportunities, all described together in terms
of functional possibilities. These capabilities certainly include the internal
power to make or choose certain things, to act on the choice of preferences but
they also concern the lack of coercion necessary for the exercise of such power
as well as the availability of circumstances. environmental and social issues.
An individual, made less free because some feasible alternatives have become
unavailable, is less happy17. For example, failure to meet one's needs tends to
result in impaired opportunities to reach different states during one's
lifetime. This is one of the reasons why the freedom of choice and the satisfaction
of the needs associated with capabilities have a special intrinsic value when
it comes to thinking about individual happiness.
The capability approach thus contributes to consolidating the
objective dimension of the happiness determination that was identified, almost
exclusively at the beginning of this reflection, with the sole feeling of
subjective well-being. This approach also justifies the attention paid, as we
shall see later, to the identification of a minimum level of happiness and its
conditions because it allows, in the same way as other determining parameters
of the experience of happiness, to make an appreciation and an objective
measure of happiness.
Nevertheless, the demonstration of the fundamental role of freedom
in the experience of happiness does not replace the approach by the subjective
satisfaction of happiness. It completes it, rather offering an alternative
conception of happiness based on the ability to perform essential functions for
human life. Gradually, the notion of the indeterminate first of happiness is
determined from well-defined dimensions, such as positive freedom, internal
freedom (ie the ability to do what one can the best of oneself, the full
exercise of one's reason, as well as other faculties of the individual18),
external freedom (that is, resources and opportunities), freedom of choice
(understood, in particular, as a non-restriction of options), autonomy, the
ability to develop plans and intentions, to initiate and take action, the
ability to do such and such, etc. This plurality of elements, considered in a
complementary and non-exclusive way - and to which would be added the feeling
of well-being, the individual judgments relating to the value of their life,
the reference to a precise neurophysiological state -, confers its substance to
the determination of the concept of happiness. It shows that its definition can
only be multidimensional.
