The main causes of pollution

Today, the main causes of environmental pollution arise primarily from the production and use of various energy sources, then from industrial activities and, paradoxically but nevertheless importantly, from agriculture.

Each of these fundamental causes of pollution will correspond to countless sources of dispersion of pollutants. The latter take place from the upstream (extractive industries) downstream, that is to say up to the domestic uses, which can play in certain cases (fermentable organic matter polluting the water for example). Thus, the consumption of chemicals marketed to the general public plays a significant role in the contamination of the environment, not to mention the considerable masses of fertilizers and pesticides dispersed in rural areas by agricultural activities.

Pollution related to the production and use of energy

The production and use of energy undoubtedly comes at the forefront of the causes of pollution of the biosphere.

Despite the oil crises of 1973 and 1979, and the latent and chronic crisis that has emerged since 2004, overall energy consumption has continued to grow. The episodic decrease in oil consumption or, at least, the slowdown in the growth of its use, observed since the late 1970s, was offset by the increase in consumption of coal, natural gas and by the development of nuclear power. In 2005, global energy consumption exceeded 10 billion tonnes of oil equivalent (toe). Of this total, oil accounted for nearly 3.9 billion tons, coal 3 billion toe, natural gas 2.5 billion toe, the rest being provided by hydropower and nuclear power
