The festival of flowers in Medellin
This festival is held each year in early August in Medellin,
the city of eternal spring, and since 1947. This is one of the most famous
cultural festivals in the country.
The festivities last about ten days and the program is rich
in cultural events: concerts, horse fair, festival of orchestras, parade of old
and modern cars, parade of dogs ...
This festival pays homage to the culture silletera, declared
intangible heritage of the nation in 2014. This culture is put forward during
the parade of silleteros, the peasants of the region, who carry on their back
wooden buildings decorated with flowers of all kinds. This construction is
often a symbol of life and the culture that carries it. The use of 'silletas'
was once a means of transporting various products.
Many families from Santa Elena (near Medellin) continue to
preserve the legacy of silletero from generation to generation and proudly
display their silletas every year during the parade. We see people bend under
the weight of structures and unsurprisingly considering their weight up to 60
kgs!
THE FLOWER PARTY (MEDELLIN)
It occurs every year in August. Throughout this kind of
carnival, we can attend and participate in various activities such as: the
cavalcade, the parade of the floats, the flowery parade or the parade of
"silleteros" (men loaded with different floral arrangements on their
backs), parade of old cars and many other entertainment with music and dance.
The Feast of Flowers is an event that attracts residents of the city of Medellin,
the region of Antioquia, and also tourists and foreigners.
On May 1, 1957, the first Medellin Flower Festival was
organized by a member of the tourist office, Antonio Uribe. The programming did
not include as many different events. It lasted 5 days, there were small
"toldos" (stands) in different parts of the city, private parties in
clubs and an exhibition of flowers at the door of the Metropolitan Cathedral,
organized by the Gardeners Club of Medellin and Monsignor Tulio Botero. Since
then other events have been incorporated, and she was included in the Guinness
Book of Records in 1996 and 1999.
By Law 838 of 25 September 2003, the President of the
Republic Alvaro Uribe Velez, declared the Silleteros and the Feast of Flowers,
Cultural Heritage of the Nation. This event which was celebrated in May from
1958 is celebrated in August, the month of the independence of Antioquia, and
since then it has not failed to take on the streets of the city of various
colors. Since 1988 the silleteros parade has been part of the Medellin Flower
Festival, identifying itself as the main event of this one. Its aim is to keep
alive the values and traditions of
Antioquia and to reach a compromise between the citizens and the child
population through their participation and their integration in the parade.
It is a parade of peasants from the region of Santa Elena,
the main place of floral culture specialty of the city at the national and
international level. They are loaded with a kind of hood or "silleta"
decorated with flowers that symbolize different aspects of the daily life of
the city, the region or the country by drawings, messages, texts etc. Some
reach a weight of 70 kg.
For this year's edition, some cultural and fun novelties have
been introduced. There will be royal dances of the sultanate, performed by the
National Ballet of Indonesia; floral exhibitions at the botanical garden; tango
at the Salon Málaga. There will also be a festival of tales and legends, as
well as a festival of humor. And for the first time, the Corporation Cine and
Video Festival of Santa Fé de Antioquia, will realize a film festival
"Festival of flowers".
The gates of Medellin, the capital of the eternal spring
(temperatures vary from 30 ° C to 16 ° C throughout the year, which is why it
is nicknamed), open and invite you to enjoy this event .
