MY FAVORITE BOOK
We have known,
"The Fury of Reading" national event around reading, which later
became "The Feast of the Book", These events are replaced today by
"A YOU TO READ" which takes place this year from May 27 to 31 2010.
It is in this context that the MEN, the Culture, the CNL and various partners
have elaborated a game: "MY PREFERRED BOOK" "to make young
people discover reading from the point of view of pleasure, to develop their
taste for the youth literature of yesterday and today. ". The game is
distributed in schools, libraries, associations, and is for students of CM1
& CM2.
The laudable
objective is to make the children talk, from one of their "COUP DE
CŒUR", their readings, their practices, to exchange them, to debate, to
make their peers envy to read the book they liked ... so as to create a
community of readers.

THE GAME
The game comes in
the form of a strong paper tray offering a kind of goose game, and 3 sets of
playing cards that the player draws according to the box on which he falls.
A first
package of questions "DO YOU KNOW? »Deals with literary culture (authors,
illustrators, characters, genres, publishers ...) and places of mediation of
the book (library, bookstore ...):« Which character says «draw me a sheep? »,«
Should I be registered to buy a book in bookstores? Among these authors, who
has not published poems? Victor Hugo, Jean Tardieu, Claude Boujon, Jean-Pierre
Simeon? "... (That's ok, the answers are on the back).
The
second series "A TON AVIS" seeks to express the player on his
readings "Who is your favorite series hero", "How would you
describe the world of Claude Ponti, Poetic, funny, scary, amazing? Why ? "
The last
set of questions "TEST" is a series of tasks to be done "Draw
the fetish object of Anthony Browne", "Mime your favorite series
hero", Write the identity card of a theater hero "... (One wonders
what others are doing while the player gathers his ideas and writes his text.)
At the end of the
game, players count their points and write the title of the featured book they
have discovered and want to read.

WHAT TO THINK ABOUT
THIS?
First surprise, the
game is played without any book (At least it's economical). Second surprise,
the covers of books that appear in abundance on the game board have absolutely
nothing to do with the questions asked (These are recent successes or titles, probably
chosen by the partner publishers, not always with a view to 'literary
objectives ...).
Now, it is
interesting to see what is the common culture called, essential to answer
questions.
Let's quote at
random:
characters:
Bertie Crochue, Pinocchio, Willy Wonka ("Charlie and the Chocolate
Factory")
albums
and novels: "Little Lou"; "Journal of a killer cat";
"Red Wolf"; "The eye of the wolf"; "The Ocean
Child"; "Yacouba", "The Wall Pass", "Billy
Elliot"; "The man who planted trees"; "Pippi Longstocking"
; "A good little devil"; ...
tales:
"Snow White", "The Little Prince"; Blue Beard, Hans and
Gretel "Michka" ...;
of the
theater: "the ogrelet"; the stage directions
authors
and illustrators: Anthony Browne, Ponti, Roald Dahl, Pef
collections:
the "Black Mouse" collection
comics:
Moulinsart Castle, Hergé
series:
"Max and Lili"; "The magic hut"; "The Club of
Five" ...
etc ...

These titles and
authors, already classic, are also excellent. They are quite easily found in
libraries. Classes that have been able to work from the C3 selections proposed
by the Ministry will undoubtedly meet there. But for the vast majority of
students, this is more like an assessment of knowledge and levels of reading
than a process of appetite and conquest, an incentive to read or a moment of
pleasure. So beware of the feeling of failure!

OUTLOOK
Good, but the
material exists, it can encourage to approach differently the literature of
youth; first to read before evaluating; to present constellations around themes
such as the character, the archetypes, the time, the universe of an
illustrator, the crime novel etc ..., to release the few titles promoted by an
intensive advertisement, to circulate the books; to set up reading books,
reading projects ... then realizing or having students make new sheets ...
