Dinosaurs are a group of animals that used to be classified as reptiles but which, in a modern approach, are considered to form a clade itself a member of that of sauropsids that contains reptiles and birds. They are distinguished from classical reptiles largely because they are erected on vertical limbs, such as mammals, unlike lizards and crocodiles for example. There is good reason to think that many of them were also warm-blooded, or at least they were not cold-blooded like reptiles, some with complex social behaviors, even taking care of themselves. their offspring.
Dinosaurs, a very diverse clade
The dinosaurs were a very diverse clade of bipedal and quadruped, carnivorous and herbivorous animals, whose evolutionary success was considerable for more than 170 million years. Appeared in the Triassic about 240 million years ago, they almost all disappeared about 66 million years ago, at the end of the Cretaceous, leaving only the birds as representative of this clade. There are fossilized remains of dinosaurs all over the planet, including the Badlands in North America, but also in Morocco, Argentina and Mongolia.

The Badlands of Alberta in Canada are a paradise for dinosaur hunters as this video explains. For a fairly faithful French translation, click on the white rectangle at the bottom right. The term dinosaur was coined in 1842 by the British paleontologist Richard Owen from the ancient Greek δεινός / deinόs ("terribly great") and σαῦρος / saûros ("lizard"). The dinosaurs whose fossils were then found appeared as a group of particular reptiles that were indeed large in size. For a long time, it was also thought that they were sluggish and sluggish animals, as unintelligent and social as lizards. We are far from these ideas today and we know that many dinosaurs were not large and they could be as small as a chicken. We also know now that several dinosaurs had feathers.
Two big types of dinosaur

There are two main types of dinosaurs according to the morphology of their basins, ie saurischiens and ornithischiens. The saurischians included sauropods (herbivores, the largest dinosaurs, such as titanosaurs) and theropods (carnivores, such as Tyrannosaurus rex). Ornithischians were very varied and all herbivores (eg Stegosaurus, Ankylosaurus, Triceratops). A group of theropods (dromaesaurids) is classically presented as the group from which the birds are derived.
The general public generally thinks that many large and reptile-like animals during the Mesozoic, such as mosasaurs, plesiosaurs, and pterosaurs were dinosaurs, but this is not the case. They were marine reptiles and flying that will disappear however with non-avian dinosaurs at the time of the famous KT crisis, at the Cretaceous-Tertiary limit, there are about 66 million. This great extinction is certainly the combination, but in proportions poorly understood and following a causality in the ecosystem also enigmatic, Deccan eruptions in India and the impact of the celestial body that created the Astroblème Chicxulub in Yucatan .
