Russia's Red List of Threatened Species lists nine extinct animal species in the country. Most have not been seen in the wild since the 19th century.
Among species extinct for a relatively short time - the monk seal. It was last seen in the Russian territorial waters of the Black Sea in the middle of the 20th century. Representatives of this hope still live in the Mediterranean.
The black sea eagle flying in Primorye [southeast of the Russian Far East, ed] is declared extinct. Her only representative is the female living in the Berlin Zoo. In the wild the black sea eagle was seen in 1968 in Korea. The specialists do not exclude that it can remain in the north of the peninsula.

The last edition of the Russian Red Book dates from 2001. According to Alexei Zimenko, the national edition must be updated at least every ten years. Russia is very late on the new edition, so it is impossible for now to understand how the official list of extinct species and subspecies has changed. There is only preliminary information.
"The new list was agreed last year and partly this year, but it has still not been validated," says the expert.
The information for the Red Book comes from many scientific sources. The list is managed by the Commission for Rare or Endangered Animals, Plants and Fungi at the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.

The members of the commission suggested adding in the Red Book species and subspecies of birds whose population has shrunk considerably in recent years. For example, out of almost 5 million ordinary doves, in 2015 only 160,000 specimens were counted.
The experts intend to include in the Red Book several mammals (including the Caspian seal, the saiga, the killer whale) and fish.
In the Red Book of Animals project published on the Department of Natural Resources website, five species are listed in the "probably missing" category.
