Categories in the red list
The red list has nine categories according to the extinction risk of the species. To belong to a category, the researchers established several criteria related to the geographical situation, the number of individuals, the distribution of populations, etc. We have already mentioned the categories DD and NE, which exist because we do not have enough information to evaluate the species in relation to the criteria requested. Other categories are known animals and plants.
The first two categories are LC (least concern) and NT (near threatened), where species are found that are not at risk. for the time being. It is the plants and animals in the following categories that are of greater concern to IUCN.
Threatened species are divided into three categories. Firstly, the VU (vulnerable or "vulnerable") where the species are already watched over assiduously and where we find, among others, pandas. Next is EN (endangered, in danger), which precedes another category even more disturbing: CR (critically endangered, translated as "critical danger"). There are large animals, such as several species of elephants and rhinos, but also smaller specimens such as insects or spiders.
There are also two much darker categories: EX (extinguished or "extinct"), which brings together the extinct species, and EW (extinct in the wild, "extinct in the wild"), which concerns the species that still exist in the wild. animal parks, but unfortunately we no longer see in the wild.
For all these categories, even LC or NT, we consider that the risk of extinction is already present. Indeed, if the species is not in danger at the moment, nothing prevents that it changes a day of category. This is the same for endangered animals, which may one day come to join these species of minor concern.
It is true that the red list is concerned about both flora and fauna, but for the rest of this article, I will focus exclusively on animals.
Animals extinct in the wild
All animal families find themselves in this sad category: mammals, birds, fish, etc. Here are some of them.
Father David's deer
Father David's deer is a typical cervid from the swampy areas of China. This specimen has been on the decline since the 19th century.
His name comes from a French missionary, Father David, who has long studied the fauna and flora on the Asian continent during many trips. Among other things, he is responsible for the discovery of the giant panda. This is how he found that this strange deer had never been studied before, which allowed him to give his name to the animal.
He mainly eats grass and foliage and enjoys spending time immersed in the water. This mammal lives in a group most of the time and looks, from afar and after Father David, to a donkey with antlers.
A deer family of father David
Unfortunately, this animal was already in danger of extinction at the time, there was only one herd in the imperial hunting park of Nanhaizi (south of Beijing), where Father David studied it. The flock suffered heavy losses during a flood in 1894, before being released to save as many people as possible. The latter were unfortunately devoured by famine-stricken peasants, then by occupiers and soldiers during the wars that followed.
Meanwhile, Father David sent some specimens to Europe. These deer could breed in captivity and acclimatize to our regions. Several individuals were able to find themselves in a few zoos around the world while their wild counterparts died out. IUCN has formalized this extinction in the wild in 2008.
Today, we try to reintroduce the father's deer in his natural habitat. One could find one day herds of deer fringing safely in the swamps of China.
The Wyoming toad
The Wyoming toad, or Baxter's toad, is an amphibian that is found only in an American refuge.
These animals used to be found in the Laramie River and Mortenson Lake, Wyoming. It was a professor at this university who discovered them in 1946, Dr. George T. Baxter, who gave the other name of this toad.
Until the 1970s, these small amphibians were doing quite well. Then, their population began to decline without any notable explanation. Several factors are thought to be the cause of this decline, such as weather phenomena (sudden drought, lack of rain, etc.) or pollution. However, another more important reason is causing harm to these animals
