"Katara" ... a neighborhood in Doha that brings together world cultures

 

A cultural and tourism landmark in the Qatari capital, Doha, that brings together the cultures of the world, contributing to the definition of Qatar’s heritage and traditions and awareness of the importance of other cultures and civilizations, through festivals, exhibitions and local, regional and international events.

 

Location

The cultural district "Katara" is located in the northeast of Doha, on the shore of West Bay, between the Pearl Qatar and the Dafna Towers area, which is Qatar's tourist and economic frontage.

 

Label

The name "Katara", which was given to the cultural district, is the oldest name used to refer to the Qatari peninsula in geographical and historical maps since the year 150 AD.

 

The name Katara appeared for the first time in the maps of Claudius Ptolemy in 150 AD, and then appeared in the Atlas of the History of Islam, where the maps identified the peoples of the Arabian Peninsula in the middle of the second century AD, as well as the geographical location of Qatar under the name Catara, southwest of the city of Al-Jarah. West of Kadara.

 

As for the name "Katara", it appeared in geographical and historical maps in the early eighteenth century AD, and in a French map of the coast of the Arabian Peninsula, the sea and the Gulf, where the name Katara was written in the form of Katara instead of Catara, and this name has been used by geographers since the issuance of the map. Ptolemy from 150 to 1738.

 

Vision

A tourist destination

Since its inception in 2008, the cultural district (Katara) has turned into a tourist and cultural destination for the residents of Qatar and tourists, who are crowded with the place during the holidays and seasons, taking advantage of a beautiful beach, stone-paved streets and various restaurants that provide food for everyone from different cultures.

 

As for the streets of the Cultural Quarter, they are narrow, winding streets that bring back the memory back to ancient times. Each of these streets leads to a landmark of the place, and Shakespeare Street is the most famous street of "Katara".

 

The bathroom towers standing at the entrance attract the attention of visitors, like other buildings and theaters, such as the Roman Theater, the Open-Air Theater, the Drama Theater, Katara Art Studios, the Qatar Music Academy, the Children's Cultural Center, the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra, the Arab Philharmonic Museum, the Center for Visual Arts, the Doha Film Institute, and the Society. The Qatari Fine Arts Council, the Poets' Council, in addition to the Katara Grand Mosque, which is an architectural masterpiece.

 

This number of theaters, halls and headquarters of artistic and cultural bodies have made the Cultural District a meeting place for all intellectuals and artists, and a center for promoting cultural awareness through festivals, exhibitions, seminars, and concerts that find in the neighborhood a suitable place for them.

 

Official and private bodies organize their cultural, social and artistic activities in the cultural district, which has become not without a festival or exhibition throughout the week, making it a place full of movement and vitality.
