The different stages of space exploration and their rationale

Knowing the stages and goals of space exploration drives the development of technology and inspires future generations of explorers.

First step and cornerstone of exploration

Before embarking on a long and difficult exploration, one must already establish a very solid foundation for this enterprise to be crowned with success. And the International Space Station is a vital component in achieving this.

The International Space Station serves as a laboratory for human health, biology, materials research, etc. It is a test bed and a stepping stone to the exploration of space beyond low earth orbit. There we learn new things to ensure our astronauts are safe, healthy and productive on the long journeys of the solar system's many exploration missions. We also learn about how biological materials and systems behave outside of the influence of gravity.

We don't yet know what the most important discovery will be made by the International Space Station, but we have already made some important breakthroughs. In the fields of human health, telemedicine, education and Earth observations which have already demonstrated their benefits for life on Earth. (The development of vaccine research, the images taken aboard the station assisting countries in disaster situations, for agriculture, and educational programs to inspire future scientists, engineers and explorers are some of these examples).

The International Space Station is arguably the largest international civilian science and technology cooperation in history. United States, Canada, Europe, Japan and Russia work very closely together. This cooperation provides critical information for us earthlings and for the future of space exploration.

With what we learn from the many science experiments conducted there, astronauts will be prepared for long journeys.

Over the next few decades humans will be sent beyond low orbit into cislunar space, between Earth and Moon (Lagrange points and others), Translunar Space, nearby asteroids, Mars and its moons Phobos and Deimos.

(cis: prefix which means “below”, “within the limit of”)

<<< The Cislunar and Translunar Space >>>

The earthworm

Cislunar Space can be visualized as a sphere whose circumference is slightly larger than the orbit of the Moon, and in which we can find thousands of artificial satellites, countless space debris, micro asteroids, the 5 points de Lagrange, high Earth orbit and the Moon itself. Numerous robotic missions have passed through this space and the Apollo missions have sent humans into this space, but to date no human mission has had the objective of exploring or working beyond low earth orbit.

Lagrange points where the gravitational influence of the Earth and the Moon cancel each other out are interesting areas because almost no propulsion is needed to keep a probe or spacecraft stationary there. The Lagrange L2 point, just after the Moon, provides a zone of radio silence for astronomical observations. Trips to point L2 would take humans further than they have ever been.

Translunar Space is the vast expanse surrounding the Earth-Moon system, which extends far beyond the orbit of the Moon and is dominated by the gravitational fields of the 2 celestial bodies.

Why explore the Cislunar and Translunar Space?

- To improve our scientific knowledge

- For economic and technological growth

- To prepare us to go further

Exploring the cislunar then translunar space will extend the human presence beyond low earth orbit and the protection of the earth's magnetic field, as we prepare for more complex missions beyond the neighborhood and therefore the attraction. gravitational and protection of the Earth.

To improve our scientific knowledge

Manned missions in this cislunar space will improve our knowledge of life in space for extended periods of time. Exploration beyond shielding the Earth's magnetic field will provide an unprecedented experience in deep space operations. We will be able to research cosmic radiation, which is potentially the most threatening element for human exploration of deep space, and develop ways to mitigate it.
