The Memorial of the Martyr, Shrine of the Martyr or Maqam Echahid (in Arabic: مقام الشهيد) is a monument to the dead overlooking the city of Algiers, erected in 1982 on the occasion of the 20 anniversary of the independence of Algeria (5 July 1962), in memory of the shahids, the fighters of the Algerian war of independence who died for the liberation of the country.

The monument, with a height of 92 meters2.3, built according to a model by the painter Bachir Yellès who imagined three stylized palms representing the three "cultural, agrarian and industrial revolutions" 2, or to symbolize three periods of the The history of Algeria: resistance to occupation and colonization, the war of national liberation, the present and future of the country4, is made up of three stylized palm leaves in concrete which meet halfway up (47 meters). The palms support a set of five floors, four of which are reserved for technical installations while the fifth, topped by an Islamic-style turret with a diameter of 10 meters, a height of 25 meters and topped by a dome of 6 meters 5.

The project to build a memorial in memory of the shaheeds of the Algerian War of Independence was originally an idea of President Houari Boumédiène. Its realization will however be under the presidency of Chadli Bendjedid, his successor, in Algiers.

This concrete monument was built by the Canadian company Fitzpatrick and designed by its counterpart Lavalin7, based on a model produced at the School of Fine Arts in Algiers under the direction of the Algerian artist Bachir Yellès. The work only lasted 9 months during 1982.

The Lavalin company is in charge of the studies and the construction of the monument. The painter Bachir Yellès, the calligrapher Abdelhamid Skander and the Polish sculptor Marian Konieczny4 also take part.

The construction of the work is a real technological challenge because of the constraints inherent in the geometry of the whole, in particular the curvature of the fins, the location of the site at the edge of a steep cliff and the strong seismicity of the sea. region. Pierre Lamarre, director of engineering and structural design, Claude Naud, expert in planning and construction methods, together with Bachir Yellès, imagine a solution that is proving to be decisive and innovative. The fins are made to rest on ball joints, and the concreting is carried out vertically up to a height of 50 meters. Secondly, they are tilted until they meet, to finally continue concreting to the top.

Nine months (from November 15, 1981 to July 5, 1982) were necessary for the construction of this architectural work. The monument was inaugurated by the then president, Chadli Bendjedid, in February 1986.
