DISCOVERING THE MARTYR MEMORIAL IN ALGIERS!

 

 

Also called the Martyr's Sanctuary or Maqam Ech-Chahid, the Martyr Memorial overlooking Algiers is a war memorial honoring the shahids, the fighters of the Algerian war of independence who died for the liberation of the country. Presentation !

 

Construction and description of the Maqam E’chahid!

This concrete monument was built and designed by the Canadians of the Fitzpatrick office and the Lavalin company. The model, meanwhile, is made at the School of Fine Arts in Algiers under the direction of the Algerian painter Bachir Yellès. In a fully artistic concern, the calligrapher Abdelhamid Skander and Marian Konieczny, Polish architect and professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw also participate in the creation of this memorial. It was the very ambition of the project that required such participation!

 

 

 

Indeed, because of its finesse, its height and the great seismicity of the region, the realization of this impressive monument was a technological challenge and yet the work only lasted 9 months! The difficulties were in particular resolved by vertical concreting of each part. In the end, the memorial consists of three stylized concrete palms 92 meters high each and which meet at more than 45 meters above the ground. Three palms which allegorically recall the three revolutions (cultural, agrarian and industrial) of the country but also resistance to colonial occupation, the war of national liberation and the future of Algeria.

 

The Martyr Memorial: between a revolutionary symbol and a resort!

If the idea of ​​a monument commemorating the anti-colonialist struggle emerged the day after the revolution, Makkam Ech-Chahid was finally erected in 1982 on the occasion of the ceremony of the twentieth anniversary of Algerian independence. At the foot of each palm leaf is built a statue seven meters high, each representing the actors of the struggle of the Algerian people (the soldier, the peasant and the worker). In addition, in the center of the circular esplanade paved with white marble, there is an altar where an eternal flame burns.

 

 

 

This altar is intended to receive the wreaths of flowers on the occasion of commemorative festivals. Symbol of popular uprising and homage to the dead for the nation, this memorial is one of the most mythical sites in Algiers! A real vacation spot, there can be an amphitheater and the Moudjahid museum on site. It should also be noted that the hill where the memorial stands has several excellent restaurants, a must-see for businessmen of all nationalities and lovers of gourmet cuisine.

 

 

 

In El Madania, on the heights of Algiers, this war memorial was erected in 1982 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Algerian independence.

 

Because of its finesse, its 92 meters in height and the great seismicity of the region, the realization of this impressive monument, entrusted to a Canadian firm and three artists - the painter Bachir Yellès, the calligrapher Abdelhamid Skander and the Polish sculptor Marian Konieczny - was a technological challenge. The difficulties were resolved by vertical concreting of each part.

The building is made up of three palm leaves which meet at mid-height, surrounding a turret surmounted by a dome. At the top of each palm leaf stands the statue of a soldier who died in the struggle for independence. The memorial is placed on an esplanade where an eternal flame burns. Below is also a crypt, an amphitheater and the Mujahedin Museum.

Note that the hill where the memorial stands conceals several excellent restaurants, meeting place for businessmen of all nationalities and lovers of delicate cuisine: in particular, Tantra, El Boustene, Grill Room and Bon Gibier.
