Cultural references

Daily acts are governed by religious tradition.

The day is subject to the rhythm of 5 prayers and you must take this into account (shop closed, mosque visit prohibited).

Thursday and Friday are the days of rest.

Yemenis have very different customs from ours. Never enter a mosque without permission, remember to take off your shoes, and if you are a woman, cover your head. Some travel agencies organize guided tours outside of worship hours.

Any gesture of intimacy in public is considered indecent (only men hold hands as a sign of friendship), as are sloppy dress.

Foreigners do not have to prove their marriage to occupy a hotel room.

The consumption of alcohol is prohibited in public.

During Ramadan, avoid drinking, eating or smoking in public during the fasting period (from sunrise to sunset).

Be respectful of the Yemenis you want to photograph, especially the women, from whom you should seek permission. You can have your photos developed on site. Do not take pictures of military sites, radio antennas ...

The recommendations

In terms of hygiene

City water should not be consumed. Domestic water should be purified, chemically or by filtration. We will only drink capsulated drinks. You can easily find reliable mineral waters. We should be wary of ice cubes, the origin of which is not guaranteed. The houses are equipped with filters, but these become clogged easily due to the sand.

The cold chain is not always guaranteed.

Fish and meats should be well cooked.

Fruits and vegetables are of good quality, but they should be washed carefully with water to which Permanganate, Micropur or Hydrochlonazone must be added. The fruits will be peeled.

Do not go to restaurants where hygiene is more than basic.

In terms of security

Following the events of September 11, 2001 and other terrorist threats, it is recommended to:

- keep constantly informed of developments in the regional situation,

- to be vigilant when traveling in town or in the provinces,
