Biography :

 

Einstein was born in Ulm, Germany on March 14, 1879 into a wealthy family.

His mother introduced him to the arts and his father, who ran an electrochemical plant, very early on communicated his taste for science. His family moved to Switzerland and it was at the Zurich Polytechnic that he continued his studies. There he met Mileva Maric, who was also a student, whom he married in 1903.

 

In 1905, he published the three major fundamental articles: Brownian motion, the photoelectric effect and the special theory of relativity. He will then be a professor in several European universities.

He continued his research to lead in 1915 to the theory of general relativity. In 1921 he received the Nobel Prize.

Hitler's coming to power in 1933 led him to immigrate to the United States because he was threatened and refused Nazi militarism. He will go to the Institute for Advanced Studies in Princeton. In 1941, fearing that Hitler would build a first atomic bomb (which has become possible thanks to his theories), he wrote a letter to the President of the USA to warn him of this risk. Very opposed to the use of this bomb, he will be a very active pacifist activist who dreams of a world government.

He died in Princeton on April 18, 1955, at the age of 76.
