Clothing
The dress code in Saudi Arabia strictly follows the principles of the hijab, the Islamic principle of modesty, especially in dress.
The clothes, wide, loose, vague, and covering to the maximum, therefore chaste and modest, or simply formal, are also adapted to the climate.
In the public domain, any wearer of clothing (visible from the outside) likely to offend modesty, according to local assessments, that is to say too tight, or revealing the skin (from the ankle to the neck), may have to return it. account in person, as well as his responsible or legal guarantor (father, uncle, husband, brother ...).
Traditionally, men wear a long shirt, covering up to the ankles, made of wool or cotton fabric (known as Thawb), white or black, with a keffiyeh (large checkered cotton square held in place by a spool thread) or a ghutra (an ordinary white square of thinner cotton, also held in place by a spool of thread, the agal) on the head. For the rare periods of cold, the men also wear a camel hair coat, Bisht.
The traditional dress of women is decorated on feast days with tribal patterns, coins, sequins, metal threads, appliques. Women must wear an abaya, or discreet or erased clothing in public. The Saudi niqab usually leaves a long slit open for the eyes.
Names of the most common (parts of) clothing:
Ghutrah (in Arabic: غتره): traditional male headdress, composed of a square of fabric ("scarf"), usually cotton, folded in different styles around the head. It is commonly worn in areas with arid climates, and provides protection against direct sun exposure, but also dust and sand.
Agal (in Arabic: عقال), part of a headdress, made of rope, generally black in color, fixed around the Ghutrah to keep it in place.
Thawb (Arabic: ثوب), robe, with long sleeves, reaching down to the ankles.
Bisht (in Arabic: بشت), traditional, masculine coat, rather reserved for special occasions, such as weddings ...
Abaya (in Arabic: عباية), female garment, black coat, which covers the whole body, loosely, except the head. The sleeves can be adorned with stitched embroidery, in different bright colors, or even with crystals. The rest of the coat is undecorated. Some women choose to cover their face with a niqab, others do not. A recent trend, especially in the west, is looking for the color of the abaya.
Kameez / Kurta Salwar, clothing for men and women, worn by the Indian and Pakistani populations in Saudi Arabia.
These rules have tended to change since the 2000s among young people, who dress in European style, especially in the provinces in the east of the country.
The women
They wear what is called "Abaya", the traditional dress of Muslim women. It is a long black dress that is worn with the "Hijab" or the scarf. The latter covers the neck and part of the hair. They also add the "Nijab" to their toilet to cover the mouth and forehead. Dressed in this way, the traditional women of the Emirates only show the eyes.
The women are usually all dressed in black, but recently there are a lot of trendy UAE toilets available in brighter colors, especially for the borders and patterns. And generally cut straight, young women today can and do afford to wear Abayas cinched at the waist.
Men
The traditional clothes of men are called "Dishdash". They also consist of a long dress and a scarf, but white in color. The men's headscarf is traditionally held by the Agal, a kind of white pipe that is to hold the headscarf in place. Each Bedouin tribe wears different scarf colors, but the most common is plain white. Today, the young emirates allow themselves to modernize the custom a little and wear scarves in two tones: for example, red and white.
Other clothes
Men and women in the emirate wear little Western clothing. However, women are allowed to take off their Abaya when they are together or at home. They can thus flaunt very fashionable clothes worn under this black veil. These are mainly clothes from oriental designers. And men do the same.
