What do you need to know before moving to the United Arab Emirates?
Expatriation in the United Arab Emirates The United Arab Emirates is seen as an Eldorado, attracting many expatriates from France and around the world every year. If you are also attracted to expatriation in the United Arab Emirates, here is what you need to know about living there.
General presentation
The United Arab Emirates is a federal state in the Middle East made up of seven emirates: Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Ajman, Sharjah, Fujairah, Ras el Khaimah and Umm al Qaiwain. Of the country's more than 9 million inhabitants, nearly 85% come from abroad. It is quite simply one of the countries hosting one of the highest proportions of expatriates in the world! Most of them are in the emirates of Abu Dhabi and Dubai, attracted by the sun and the high wages that are commonplace.
A culture apart
In the United Arab Emirates, you will certainly be surprised by the duality of the local culture, attached to its origins while going hopelessly towards the future.
Living in the United Arab Emirates is an experience that can greatly expand your personal and professional horizons, as the country welcomes many nationalities. You will therefore have to work and live among totally different cultures, a challenge that can prove to be very enriching! It does, however, require a certain capacity for adaptation, which you will certainly achieve by being open-minded and flexible.
From the moment you arrive, the call to prayers five times a day will remind you that you are first and foremost in a Muslim country. The wearing of the veil for women is not compulsory, but so far they still do not have the same rights as men. The culture has remained very conservative in all respects. Generally speaking, you will quickly understand that to an outside view, this country represents above all peace and order, cleanliness and organization. As in any country with a different culture, be sure to respect local customs in order to integrate as easily as possible.
The UAE also offers an ever more varied cultural offer, notably with the construction of a cultural district on Saadiyat Island, in Abu Dhabi, which has recently hosted the Louvre Abu Dhabi.
Work in the United Arab Emirates
The United Arab Emirates are known for their economy based on the production and export of petroleum. But this financial windfall had to cope with the fall in oil prices, and the government had to tackle a policy of diversification. The construction, transport, high technology, finance and tourism development sectors are all new markets that are developing in the Emirates, attracting all kinds of profiles. Whatever your skills and experience, it is possible to find an interesting opportunity to work in the United Arab Emirates.
Whatever your sector of activity and your level of study, know that the practice of English is essential. Note also that several hundred French companies are established in the United Arab Emirates in sectors as varied as the luxury industry, agrifood, engineering, energy, transport ... so many opportunities for you to find a job where your Francophonie will be valued! You can also try to find a VIE from these companies.
When searching for employment, it is advisable not to canvass companies during the month of Ramadan, when working hours are shortened and the hiring process is not the priority for companies. The period December / January corresponds to the winter holidays, when many expatriates return to their countries to spend the end of the year holidays with their families. Here too, hiring takes a back seat. The summer period seems the most suitable for your job search, as it corresponds to the departure season for many expatriates, who follow the school calendar.
The United Arab Emirates work visa
To work in the United Arab Emirates, you need a visa and a work permit.
If you have found a job in the United Arab Emirates from abroad, then you will only need a passport valid for a minimum of six months upon entering the country and recent color photographs. It will then be up to your company to take care of the procedure and all costs related to obtaining your work permit.
If you want to do your job search locally, this is also possible by arriving with a tourist visa first. People of French or European nationality do not need to apply for a visa in advance, and will directly receive a visa valid for 90 days on arrival
