What actions can you take to help your community during the COVID-19 crisis?
During this difficult period, many people are showing solidarity by multiplying solidarity actions in order to reach out to people in need. So if you're in good health and have the time and resources, why not make a commitment too? This can be a wonderful opportunity to help those around you. Here are some ideas for actions you could take.
donate blood
Around the world, blood collections have been slowed down since the start of the epidemic: It seems that fewer and fewer people feel safe enough to go and donate blood. However, the needs are still great, many patients continue to need blood to live. More than ever, hospitals need your help: In the United States alone, nearly 3,000 Red Cross blood drives have been canceled due to the pandemic.
The blood donation process is easy and usually takes less than an hour, you can even do it on your lunch break. A single donation can save up to three lives. Donating blood is considered a legitimate reason to leave your home, so it can even be a good opportunity to take a walk outside :)

Provide accommodation for medical staff
Finding themselves at the forefront of the struggle, many healthcare professionals need somewhere to stay to isolate themselves from their families or find accommodation closer to their work. Making it easier for them to travel by allowing them to live closer to their place of work can really improve their quality of life and comfort.
If you have a second home or an empty house, that you can and want to host a carer, join the HomeExchange COVID-19 solidarity group on the platform to be visible to members in need! To learn more, click here .
Create protective masks printed in 3D
If you are one of the people who have a 3D printer at home, you could use it to make protective masks for healthcare workers! Pili, who is part of the communication team at HomeExchange, helps medical staff in her city, Cordoba, Spain, with her 3D printer. She also let us know that in Spain there are groups made up of people from all walks of life working together to provide support and address mask shortages.
“It is very rewarding for us to be able to help hospitals from home, it makes us feel a little more useful,” Pili shared with us.

To give money
If you would like to contribute financially, there are many organizations that would appreciate your generosity. Local or national charities, such as the World Health Organization, need your donations to do good work. Here is a list of other organizations you can donate to.
Our members explain how they help their community
“I set aside every Tuesday to run errands and deliver them to elderly people in need. It feels good to contribute to the general solidarity momentum: Although it is never easy to choose the groceries for another person 😉
Not everyone has family or computer knowledge, so we have to accommodate by being available by phone. Keeping vulnerable people safe is a good way to keep busy. They are very grateful every time”

"I walk my neighbours' dogs because they are in quarantine following their return from Canada".

"My son Léon, thanks to the help of a physical education teacher from his school (and a little thanks to my help too), organized a walk, as well as a run and a bike race in solo. Sponsored, he hoped to get about 300 euros [for the World Health Organization]....he got 2,225!”

"We have created a group called "helping small businesses - neighborhood name" on FB. Every business can post their services there. So some people can help merchants with marketing and social media. We also collect what we are calling in “basic food baskets” in coordination with our local supermarket to deliver to poor families in our community.”

“I have just finished baking 485 cupcakes and cookies for a group of volunteers who will be distributing them to staff at nearby hospitals in my neighborhood.

"For the second time, I will be donating fabric, rubber bands and pillowcases for lining masks, to someone I know who makes them at home."

"I recovered old computers that people no longer used. I put them back into operation with a more efficient system to lend them to families who could not afford to take their children online. ".

"I am an educator specializing in child protection. I sew masks for children in care, their educators and the poorest families with whom I work. I also sew masks for my colleagues. I am not paid. In return, I ask for food that we distribute to the homeless in my city".

“I have been baking my own bread for many years. It is therefore quite natural that since the start of confinement, I have prepared batches that I share with the inhabitants of my building”.

"For my part, I help elderly people by remote maintenance. I take control of their computer, so that we can buy medicines online at the pharmacy. For example, I was able to help my 86-year-old father. He was very happy, he is very proud to be able to do it on his own afterwards. I connected to his computer and prepared with him what he wanted to buy. He then paid online... "he had never done before! I also take care of buying them fruit, vegetables and meat that I leave in front of the house".
Valerie, 10 exchanges
“Since the start of the confinement, we have taken care of the two children of our neighbour, who takes care of them all alone (before the confinement, she was only a neighbor) to prevent them from being alone all the time. daytime."
