In 1922, the British archaeologist Howard Carter made, almost by chance, the greatest archaeological discovery of all time: the tomb of Tutankhamun.
The young Tutankhaton was only 9 years old when he ascended the throne and died at 19, probably from an infection, perhaps from an accident. The young king became one of the most famous pharaohs in history. Not for his feats of arms but for the sumptuousness of his funerary furniture discovered in the Valley of the Kings.
More than 3000 precious objects were placed in the tomb of Tutankhamun to help him in his future life. The burial chamber discovered by Carter contained four golden shrines, inside which was a red quartzite sarcophagus containing three nested coffins. Tutankhamun's mummy lay in the final coffin, which is solid gold and weighs around 110.4 kilos. His body was wrapped in linen and on his face was a gold mask, unquestionably the most beautiful of its kind found in the world to date.
