Tutankhamun's treasures

More than 3,000 precious objects were placed in Tutankhamun's tomb to aid him in his later life, and on the walls of the burial chamber are painted scenes depicting his journey to the afterlife. The chamber contained four golden shrines, inside which was a red quartzite sarcophagus containing three nested coffins. Tutankhamun's mummy lay in the final coffin, which is solid gold and weighs around 110.4 kilos. Her body was wrapped in linen and over her face was a lovely golden mask.

Three models of luxury boats (left) were found in Tutankhamun's tomb. The canopies at the stern and bow are decorated with the symbols of the sphinx and the bull. Thirty-two model boats were placed in the tomb for Tutankhamun to use in the afterlife. The barge model on the right is one of seven similar models found in the Tomb Treasure. The barges transported people and goods from one side of the Nile to the other. Since they had no sails, and their oars were only used to steer the boat, they had to be towed in a flotilla. Tutankhamun's mummy was protected by a series of envelopes, fitting one inside the other: four wooden chapels housed a quartzite tank, which contained three mummy sarcophagi. Removed from the body by the embalmers, as was customary, the viscera of the deceased benefited from a similar device in the adjoining room: a gilded wooden chapel concealed a chest carved in calcite.

Under the lid, Howard Carter discovered four corks representing the young king. They closed four compartments dug in the stone which concealed four small gold coffins containing the mummified organs. The one exhibited in Paris in 2019 housed the liver, the other three the lungs, stomach and intestines.
Each organ was placed under the double protection of a funerary spirit, one of the four sons of Horus, three of whom had animal heads (here Amset), and a female deity (here Isis). Represented arms outstretched on one of the sides of the wooden chapel and one of the angles of the calcite chest, Isis spreads her wings inside the small canopic coffin, on a gold leaf lining the tank and covered with prophylactic formulas. On the king's nemes, we can see the head of the cobra goddess Wadjet, patroness of Lower Egypt, associated with that of the vulture goddess Nekhbet, patroness of Upper Egypt. Protective wings cross over the chest and back of the coffin covered with a pattern of feathers in gold, colored glass and carnelian in its lower part.
The death of the hippopotamus

Camped on a frail skiff reminiscent of papyrus boats and wearing the red crown of Lower Egypt, the young pharaoh is about to strike an invisible animal with his harpoon. A rope is wrapped around his left hand. This figure of the harpooner king, which appears from the 1st dynasty, refers us to the ritual killing of the hippopotamus and to the mythical combat of Horus, son of Isis and Osiris, against his uncle Seth in the swamps of Chemnis, the usurper having taken the appearance of the pachyderm.
