Visit Luxor and its surroundings

On the site of the temple of Karnak

On the site of the temple of Karnak

Luxor is a city built on the remains of the ancient ancient city of Thebes. Thebes was the capital of Egypt during the Middle and New Kingdom periods, i.e. over the period from about -2000 to -1000 BC. It was then the most revered city in Egypt, and included temples and a necropolis.

The ruins of ancient Thebes were classified as World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in 1979. The name Luxor comes from the Arabic "al kousour" meaning "the castles", in connection with the many temples or ruins of temples present in this region.

In the following paragraphs, I deliberately remain approximate on the prices of entrance tickets to the different places. I share the orders of magnitude, but these rates have changed a lot in recent years between the decline in tourism in the early 2010s, and its gradual rise. They nevertheless give an idea, knowing that 100 Egyptian Pounds (LEG) are worth around 5 euros.

Luxor Temple

This is the characteristic element of this city of Luxor: a magnificent temple of ancient Egypt on the banks of the Nile. This one was dedicated to the worship of the god Amon.

The obelisk of Luxor temple

The obelisk of Luxor temple

Among the particularities of this temple, we can note:

a 26 meter high pink granite obelisk. For information, the obelisk of the Place de Concorde in Paris comes from this temple of Luxor. It was offered by Egypt to France in 1836 as a sign of goodwill. Previously there were 2 obelisks in this temple!

the great court of Ramses II, surrounded by large pylons.

    a granite chapel.

giant statues in a standing position and colossi in a seated position.

Another notable and particularly singular point: the presence of a mosque inside the temple. In fact, its construction dates from the time when the temple was buried in the sand, and therefore adds curiosity to this site!

For the entrance fee, it is necessary to count about 150 Egyptian pounds.
