Shopping guide: how to choose your teapot?

Are you a tea lover? Teapots come in a multitude of families, sizes and materials. In cast iron, stainless steel, porcelain, glass, electric… The offer reflects this universe: rich and vast! How to choose the right teapot, the one that will meet your needs? Here is all you need to know.

What is a teapot used for?

The teapot is an object from a long, very long tradition: the very first appeared in China in the 15th century, and tea has an even older history! This kitchen utensil as we know it is a derivative of the kettle and bribe, very popular in Chinese cultural life. In France, it was Louis XIV who was the first to use it. But then what is it for? The teapot performs three tasks:

She infuses the tea to spread a generous aroma. The longer the tea is infused, the darker its color will be, which will make its taste intense;

The teapot keeps the drink warm: tea can be drunk at any time of the day, which is why it is essential that the teapot keeps the heat;

It is used to preserve the aroma of the tea: during infusion, the teapot keeps the smell of the leaves to allow you to smell the perfume of the drink before tasting.

Classic teapot: traditional charm

Several choices of classic teapots are available to you. One of the oldest is the cast iron teapot. This durable material has the advantage of keeping the tea warm. As with the Yougan 1L teapot , the cast iron resists bacteria and rust. These teapots are suitable for black, dark and Oolong teas, which require a long infusion. Another material: stainless steel. The stainless steel teapot is resistant to high temperatures and corrosion. It is rather suitable for teas that require a short infusion at high temperature. The Stelton 04-2 teapot is ideal for green and black tea.

For a more traditional design, you can turn to a porcelain teapot. In China, this material is a symbol of refinement. In addition to being elegant, a porcelain teapot does not affect the flavors of the tea. And unlike stainless steel teapots, this noble material goes well with white, green or yellow tea. If you are the only one drinking tea, the Blue Mandala porcelain teapot will satisfy you.

Last classic teapot: the glass teapot. Like porcelain, this transparent material is suitable for light teas that require infusion at low temperatures. The Bodum Assam 1L teapot is ideal for filling four cups.

Electric teapot, tea machine: simple and quick preparation

Perhaps you prefer an electric teapot? Its strong point is to adjust the temperature and the infusion time, in order to suit all types of tea. Riviera and Bar teapots feature between three and eight pre-recorded programs and allow you to select the steeping time.

You can choose a tea maker if you prefer efficiency to traditional preparation. The Riviera and Bar Origin machine uses slow rotation for gentle stirring infusion. This system releases the aromas of the tea, whether loose or in a bag.

What selection criteria for my future teapot?

The material of your teapot is not the only criterion of choice. Many other elements must be taken into consideration before its acquisition:

The capacity of the tank is not the same, whether you are alone or several to drink tea. 500ml is enough for one person. On the other hand, if many of you like tea, opt for a tank between one and two liters.

Filtration plays a crucial role in flavor infusion and aroma release. For this, you can use a tea sock – suitable for loose tea –, a disposable filter, a tea infuser or an infuser built into your teapot .

Heating the water is a fundamental detail in the preparation, since the temperature varies according to the type of tea. A teapot with an adjustable temperature makes this step easier.

It should not be forgotten that a teapot requires regular maintenance. That's why it's best to choose a model that's easy to clean and has a removable tea basket.

Our advice for a successful tea

Successful tea requires knowing several rules:

Depending on the variety of tea you choose, the infusion time and the degree of water differ. Green tea and white tea require two to three minutes of steeping. You must ensure that the temperature does not exceed 80 degrees, otherwise the leaves will burn and the drink will become bitter. Oolong tea and black tea must be infused for three to five minutes in very hot water, to allow the drink to release all its virtues and flavors.

The quality of the water is as important as its temperature. If you use tap water to brew your tea, it is best to filter it. A filter jug removes limestone to obtain purified water.

For more intense aromas, choose loose tea: one teaspoon for 250 ml of water. Once the tea has been chosen and the water filtered, all you have to do is enjoy!
